Publisher's summary

#1 NATIONAL BESTSELLER • From Booker Prize winner Salman Rushdie, a searing, deeply personal account of enduring—and surviving—an attempt on his life thirty years after the fatwa that was ordered against him

On the morning of August 12, 2022, Salman Rushdie was standing onstage at the Chautauqua Institution, preparing to give a lecture on the importance of keeping writers safe from harm, when a man in black—black clothes, black mask—rushed down the aisle toward him, wielding a knife. His first thought: So it’s you. Here you are.

What followed was a horrific act of violence that shook the literary world and beyond. Now, for the first time, and in unforgettable detail, Rushdie relives the traumatic events of that day and its aftermath, as well as his journey toward physical recovery and the healing that was made possible by the love and support of his wife, Eliza, his family, his army of doctors and physical therapists, and his community of readers worldwide.

Knife is Rushdie at the peak of his powers, writing with urgency, with gravity, with unflinching honesty. It is also a deeply moving reminder of literature’s capacity to make sense of the unthinkable, an intimate and life-affirming meditation on life, loss, love, art—and finding the strength to stand up again.

Critic reviews

“Candid, plain-spoken and gripping . . . Knife is a clarifying book. It reminds us of the threats the free world faces. It reminds us of the things worth fighting for.”The New York Times

“Knife isn’t so much about pondering imminent death than it is an affirmation—an insistence—on returning to life.”San Francisco Chronicle

“The subject—the idea for which Rushdie nearly died—is the freedom to say what he wants . . . Rushdie survived, but he has too many scars to be certain that the idea will. This book is his way of fighting back.”The Atlantic

Important Testimony of Resilience

Loved listening to Salman Rushdie retell the fateful day an Islamic extremist attempted to end his life. It’s also a love letter to his new wife, poet Rachel Eliza Griffiths. Earnest, raw and vulnerable.

In his voice

Was glad his story was told in his own voice rather than an actor/narrator as some of his other books.

Authors ability to take us on this harrowing journey in such a realistic way.

Loved an honest, take of the gloves approach he took in tackling some very tricky topics. His usual defense of sarcasm and humorous coatings was absent to my delight. Being an avid SR fan since I was a teenager, this was a whole new side of the author. While he contends that this experience hasn’t changed him as an author, I feel there is a clear change in this very autobiographical work on how he presents the narrative. Furthermore I think this book is part of his healing/therapeutic journey which makes it fantastic and so Real.
To the author: as someone who shares your roots from not just India but also Kashmir, if you read this pls know that many of your readers and fans were deeply affect by this travesty in the name of religion. So happy to see you back healthy and strong, despite all the odds. Can’t wait for your next work.

Art as Renewal

Rushdie offers us a vision of his masterful response to trauma through his gift for story-telling: his almost murder in Chautauqua and his road to recovering from this. His intelligence, his dedication to the facts, his fierce tenacity to ask questions of himself as well as a climactic inquiry in his imagination with” the A” . The A has had enough of the imaginary dialogue but he’s told by the author, “No, no,” basically, you don’t get to end this conversation. I’m the writer and my words will prevail. Hallelujah! This theme of art as the final word is a major one post this near-fatal attempted murder (read his “Victory City”). And Rushdie’s art is uncompromisingly brilliant. I am very grateful he continues to write and bless the world with his art.

Intimate encounter

To be honest, just as Salman Rushdie suggested, i knew more about the book that I hadn’t read (the satanic verses) that I should admit.
His name to me was associated with the book and I thought I may as well give a shot to hear more about thischap. And you cannot but end the book with a deep respect and, sense of friendship and admiration for this unique person who is so kind and thoughtful and educated And so able to communicate with his readers. Now, I am definitely going to read one or more other of his books. If you have not read any others I would suggest that this is one you should read in order to get to know the person. I feel I have had the opportunity to meet a real human being that I would choose to introduce an alien race as a representative of the best of us. His writing is amazing, his narrating is superb, and I thoroughly enjoyed this quality interesting lovely book.

Courage, intelligence and self-worth

This book must have been both healing and oh so tough to write. I’m so sorry this happened to you Salman, and also proud of you. You telling yourself to live live live resonated and will be used. I also think you brilliantly reduced A’s already non-existing power.
This was my first book, and I’ll read more now that I have.

Excellent Listen!

I've been a fan of Rusdie's writing over the past 25 years, met him at a book event in 2008 and shook his hand. I was shocked at the news of this attack and after listening to his memoir Joseph Anton (about 5 months before his attack) I was pleased to see Knife as a necessary though unfortunate follow up.

Chapters 1 and 6 (where he has a fictional conversation with his attacker) were standouts.

Highly recommend for anyone following this man's journey through existence!
