Publisher's summary

The latest book in the Struggle for a Crown series by best-selling author Griff Hosker!

King Richard is barely buried when the men who opposed him plot and plan to remove the new King, Henry Bolingbroke! With enemies in the north and the west, the new king and his son, Henry of Monmouth, find themselves besieged on all sides not knowing whom they can trust. William Strongstaff, now a lord, is the only one they can truly rely upon, and any thoughts of hanging up his sword are forgotten as King Henry sends the former royal bodyguard to help his son and quash a Welsh rebellion.

Based on the events leading up to the battle of Shrewsbury, the story is fast moving, with larger than life characters like Harry Hotspur and Owain Glendower!

William Strongshaft does not disappoint!

Despite its classification as historical fiction, I find the ongoing narrative of the English nobility, the rapid progression of the storyline, and the development of William Strongshaft and his family to be highly enjoyable. Additionally, the narration is of exceptional quality.

Like Shakespeare paints a poor portrait of a great King

Overall a fun read. Wish someone would give old Bolingbroke a fair shake though 🥸

Good actions but plot too convoluted to follow

If you like guts & glory then Hosker is your man. You rarely go any extensive period without good actions. The plot & intrigues may have been a bit overwhelming. After a while I lost track of the lords and which of the 4 sides they were on, especially when they betrayed each other constantly.

holds your interest

Good story. Good performance. Held my interest throughout. Hero has a huge ego. Needs editing.

The narrator

I love the stories and the narrator is perfect. I’ve listened to another series by Hosker with a different narrator and it just wasn’t the same. I love these books and listen to them daily while at work.

Adequate

I like this book not much in the way of historical value but, only 1 in 10 thousand historical fiction books ever do. Overall it was mildly entertaining and a enjoyable listen.
