Story
Best-selling author John Ortberg shares how Jesus' influence has swept over history and how his vision of life continues to impact humanity today. Jesus' impact on our world is highly unlikely, widely inescapable, largely unknown, and decidedly double-edged. It is unlikely in light of the severe limitations of his earthly life; it is inescapable because of the range of impact; it is unknown because history doesn't connect dots; and it is doubled-edged because his followers have wreaked so much havoc, often in his name.

Editorial reviews
Dr. Bill Creasy of Logos Bible Study uses a literary, historical approach to examine and enliven the bible for modern listeners. Dr. Creasy draws on his studies, travels, and personal anecdotes to depict a vivid picture of the works of scripture. Somewhere between a sermon and a college lecture, he delivers these audiobooks with authority but a pleasantly friendly voice and a touch of fun, using contemporary references.
In this lesson, Dr. Creasy discusses the hardships that Joshua overcomes in leading the Israelites into Canaan and conquering Jericho in the Book of Joshua. As Dr. Creasy puts it, there were no satellites for intel so they had to figure out other forms of reconnaissance.

The ancient Toltecs believed that life, as we perceive it, is a dream. We each live in our own personal dream, and these come together to form the dream of the planet, or the world in which we live. Problems arise when our perception of the dream becomes clouded with negativity, drama, and judgment (of ourselves and others), because it's in these moments of suffering that we have forgotten that we are the architects of our own reality and we have the power to change our dream if we choose.

Easy work of a tough book
It's not an easy job to take people down the bloody book of Joshua and successfully out the other side, but Dr. Creasy did it. As always he brings in historical and scriptural context to help you better understand the book. He also brings in humor and modern day analogies.

He’s a good story teller.
I appreciate how descriptive the narrator is, but I found his comments about how he would act as a Jericho dweller unsettling. Specifically, he mentioned that he would have attacked the people of God at 2 a.m. while they were obeying God with circumcision. He related this to the biblical story of Jacob’s sons avenging their sister’s rape by tricking the men of Shechem into being circumcised and then slaughtering them while they were recovering.
While I understand the humor and cleverness in his analogy, it highlights the fallibility of man. It’s important to remember that the people he’s referring to were under God’s protection. As the Bible says, “When your ways please the Lord, even your enemies will be at peace with you.” The fear of the Israelites by their enemies is a testament to God’s protection.
Additionally, the example he used led to Levi and Simeon being cursed for their actions, suggesting that using one’s cleverness for such purposes can lead to negative consequences. Given that the narrator serves in a Levitical priesthood, this point feels particularly relevant and ironic.
Overall, while his approach was clever, it raises questions about the appropriateness of his analogies and the messages they convey.

the ending comments alone are worth the price
Like other Logos Bible Study audible books, this one has Dr. Creasy reading and commenting on scriptures. He uses history and archaeological findings to talk about certain events. He also addresses the violence, which can make the book of Joshua hard to read / understand. Dr. Creasy's ending comments link this OT book to the NT in a way I had not heard of before.

By giving cultural and historical context Creasy gives the characters life and brings you along as an observer to the story.
Referencing related scriptural texts provides evidence to support that scripture is a unified text.
