Acerca de esta escucha

Jesus taught that we should beware when all men speak well of us. Few have ever spoken well of John Knox, either in his own lifetime or in the centuries since. Was he excessively harsh and fanatical as his critics have painted him? Or was he appropriately hard and firm as his time and calling required?

In John Knox: Stalwart Courage, Douglas Wilson staunchly defends this staunch reformer, not only lauding his stalwart courage, but also upholding his much-neglected gentler virtues - love, mercy, tenderness, and humility. At Knox’s funeral, one of his friends said, “Here lies one who neither flattered nor feared any flesh.” John Knox sought the approval of neither commoner nor queen, but only his God. John Knox was a reformer of church and culture worthy of honor and emulation, and his story should be one we know well.

This was a great overview of his life and how he fit into Scottish and English history and the reformation.

Solid and say to read

Douglas Wilson has written a most timely book on John Knox, one hero of the Reformation who occasionally gets overlooked. Douglas carefully paints Douglas as completely as possible, showing all sides of his personality. It’s truly a remarkable work. And that speaks immeasurably to the hearts of believers. Perfection. And includes the best narration by David Webb.

What a man of God

It was informative and interesting, I felt convicted in my own lack of service son to the Lord

Informative and interesting

This book is motivating and encouraging, showing that by God’s grace and His Holy Spirit, a man/woman can be used for His utmost purpose irrespective of the worldview or the era. I am encouraged to dig deeper in Christ and fearless, live with honesty and integrity so that Christ will be constantly glorified.

A must read/hear

For some reason the reader does dreadful impersonations of different accents whenever quoting people of a different culture. A strangely unnecessary and ignorant choice.

Not enough about Knox’s life with racist-impersonations

Not enough biography. Where did he grow up, how did he become who he was, what is presbyterian, how did he lead. None of these questions were answered in detail. Author is sure to put his opinions of his interpretation of the constitution into this book along with apologizing for hatred in the name of God. Author thinks the only right thought is regarding protestants - not Catholics, Hindus, Muslim or any other religion. The delivery of the audio is good though.

Less about Knox and more about Author's Politics

Mr Wilson shows a good knowledge of the material though claiming that Knox would support separation of church and state is a bit of a stretch. The reader, however, was a tremendous distraction. He drops into what he thinks is a Scottish accent for quotations of Knox. As a native of Edinburgh myself, it was simply an irritation. His English accent for C. S. Lewis was hardly much better.

A good biography hampered by the narrator.

Doug Wilson often revisit and expands on ideas found earlier in the book. This helped me learn much in just a short time with an audiobook. This was my first book on John Knox and it was a good intro into his life and work.
