Publisher's summary

God has always been interested in turning unlikely people into his most fervent followers. Prostitutes and pagans, tax collectors and tricksters. The more unlikely, the more it seemed to please God and to demonstrate his power, might, and mercy. America in the 1960s and 1970s was full of unlikely people - men and women who had rejected the stuffy religion of their parents' generation, who didn't follow the rules, didn't fit in. The perfect setting for the greatest spiritual awakening of the 20th century.

With passion and purpose, Greg Laurie and Ellen Vaughn tell the amazing true story of the Jesus Movement, an extraordinary time of mass revival, renewal, and reconciliation. Setting fascinating personal stories within the context of one of the most tumultuous times in modern history, the authors draw important parallels with our own time of spiritual apathy or outright hostility, offering hope for the next generation of unlikely believers - and for the next great American revival.

Those who lived through the Jesus Revolution will find here an inspiring reminder of the times and people that shaped their lives and faith. Younger listeners will discover a forgotten part of recent American history and, along with it, a reason to believe that God is not finished with their generation.

Great listen

This is a great listen! I never realized all this went on in the 60-70’s.

Fascinating History of the Jesus Movement

An important contribution that dives into the rise of this subculture during a transitional period of American history, and explains the impact that is still felt today.

Thank you

Thank you for helping me understand the generation my parents belonged to better. I was born in 1974. This book gave me a better understanding of the “whys” of the good, bad and ugly of Christianity that I grew up in during the 80s and 90s. As a Gen Xer I naturally struggle with cynicism… plus here in 2023 it’s the age of cynicism, I suppose… I want to be open to a revolution if it would be real and not controlled & fabricated by narcissistic leaders.

Great listen!

As someone who started going to a Calvary church in college it was really neat to hear about its origins. We need Jesus, plain and simple. It doesn’t matter who you are, where you come from, your beliefs or anything else. You are a child of God and Jesus wants that relationship with you.

Inspiring on many levels

I listened to this after having watched the movie of the same name, expecting it to be closely aligned but more detailed. It was not that, but I found it complementary in other unexpected and positive ways.
The book blends a substantive national historical narrative of the 1950s to 1990s with details of the actual events the movie portrayed. I found this combination both educational and illuminating. Inspiring in seeing how God does His work from macro events into the hearts of individuals through His Holy Spirit and for Christ’s glory.
As compelling as the movie was, the book is much better in conveying the range of heartbreak and of ultimate joy that Greg Laurie has experienced - and that to some extent all who follow Christ will experience.
I loved the listing of names of those hippies saved during the revolution who have gone on to found churches that God has used to bring thousands more to him. The wake of the Jesus Revolution continues in these, and in other ways.
The final part of the book is a moving call to believers to seek and pray for a new revival in our time. May it be so!
Kudos also to the narrator, whose articulation was clear and who varied tone and emphasis in a way that kept my attention while listening.

Great history of early Calvary Chapel

This is a great read, it's a history of the late 60's and early 70's, popular political and social culture, as well as the Jesus Movement. The narrator is allright, though I was wishing it was Mr. Laurie, it wouldn't have sounded right with the perspective of the book. It's a lot of fun.

Churchianity.

I heard about the movie based on this book. I decided to read it before seeing it. I was born in the late 70s, raised in the church, and raised in the rural South. This book was thought provoking and convicting in many ways. I liked the historical aspects of the book that were woven into the story of our country’s latest Great Awakening. The ideas about enculturation and exclusion within faith bodies are things I will be praying about and pondering for the foreseeable future. Can we have another awakening? Absolutely. Am I prohibiting its arrival?
