I am tempted to rank James Monroe.

The author's portrayal of President Monroe is heroic from birth to death. The maturity Monroe displayed as an adolescent student and soldier is inspiring to any. His selflessness in sacrifice as a statesman is apparent, and his ability to unify this nation has yet to be matched by any other POTUS. After reading this book, I am tempted to rank James Monroe in my personal top five list of all the presidents.

James Monroe and a Nation's Call To Greatness.

Monroe's Presidency was called the "Era of Good Feeling" for good reason, and this book covers that and much more quite well in a readable style.

Monroe was a true leader...

Fifth president. Two terms. Served as an officer in the Revolutionary War under Washington. Became governor of Virginia and ambassador to France, Spain and England. Negotiated the Louisiana Purchase between the United States and Napoleon, thereby doubling the size of our country. Secretary of state under Madison and became acting secretary of war during the War of 1812 against the British.

Unfortunate person of the history.

I rate this history excellent, even though I think it less excellent than Feeling, Wood and Henry Adams. It is a complete history, although not as detailed as the other authors cited, and it is eminently readable. The author impressed me with how little I knew about the Monroe presidency, the last of the founding fathers, and how much of consequence happened in his life and under his watch.

It is worth reading.

Is it worth reading? Yes, but you really have to hold your nose during some of the parts where the author is really attempting to shape every event into a syrupy commentary on Monroe while detracting from other figures. While a lot of this is factual, Monroe was not a perfect man.

I rate this history book A+

I rate this history excellent, even though I think it less excellent than Ferling, The Monroe Doctrine marked the passage of the United States from a new nation to a powerful international nation, something I knew, but not in the detail that Unger presents. I am just a reader of history, not an expert, but I do think I'm qualified to recommend this history to others who also love the pageant of our history.

I realize the amazing life he led.

Before reading this book, I knew very little about our 5th president. From the early days of the Revolutionary War, ambassador to 3 different countries, the Louisiana Purchase, being thrust into the War of 1812, to the Monroe Doctrine this book gives a solid overview of his life.

Well done, indeed.

A stunning -- aspect of this biography. Monroe participated in all the seminal events in the formation of our nation. But, most of us, myself included, remember him only for the "Monroe Doctrine." The author also gives us a wonderful glimpse of Monroe's relationship with his wife, the fascinating Elizabeth Kortright who, in a gesture of extreme bravery, helped save the life of Lafayette's wife. For me, this was a fabulous introduction to an important and often overlooked Founding Father. Well done, indeed.

An Excellent Narrative.

This is a superb and very well written biography of an unjustly neglected Founding Father. Of necessity - this is not a scholarly tome, although certainly well-researched - some of the context of the events in which Monroe participated and was affected by are presented without too much detail. But, we're all grown-ups and can research events that intrigue us.

Great If You Want A Quick Overview.

The book is exactly what most reviewers indicated: a good overview of Monroe's life and impact on history without tedious historical minutia. The author's opinions of previous president's to me but I got what I wanted to learn about Monroe in a relatively easy read.
