About this listen

This wasn't in the contract.

Simon Quigley had no idea what to expect when he agreed to do this for the money, but the eight-foot-tall pink alien isn't what he was expecting. For starters, Simon's straight.

And Mohrn isn't a girl.

The contract? It's unbreakable.

It's going to be a long five years...

Book 1 in the Maxim Colonies series. This sci-fi/space opera romance features a male human and a non-binary alien pairing, a "mail-order bride" for hire trope, m-preg, aliens who look like aliens, smol and tall pairing, and a guaranteed HEA!

Good story overall, but maybe not for everyone

So overall I really liked the two main characters. The story and world building were interesting and I would really have liked to have heard more. However, I feel like half the book was just medical procedures about the human getting butt stuff done. Like, ok. Important, I guess, but we don't even meet the other MC until like towards the end of the book, then it's a whirlwind romance, followed by like 3 chapters in which 1.5 years of the relationship are glossed over, and then like 2 chapters to tie up all loose ends. I feel like the focus of the book was absolutely not on the two MCs. Like, give us a POV from the non-human MC and what's happening on their side of the story sprinkled in during the endless 15 chapters of butt stuff medical procedures the human is doing - that would have been better in my opinion. Also, the main narrator use the same voice for all of the human characters and it became very difficult to tell apart who was talking. The second narrator just had a weird way of talking and a strange cadence and I did not like listening to him narrate the 2 or 3 chapters he got. Overall not a bad way to spend an afternoon listening to a book but I can't see myself re-listening to this.

Wow

I’m new to this Author but this book has it all. The slow build, emotions, and some very intimate scenes. The sadness of Mohrn’s backstory had me holding back tears more than once. The determination and fierceness that Simon shows to protect his love is OMG in the feels. I hadn’t even gotten half way through when I got the second book in the series.

Blessings for Simon and Maure

This book has a lot of inner dialogue. But the character of Simon does at least joke with himself and those around him. A blessing, a scientist who does not have evil dastardly plans. I grew to really love this story after the first third was read. I kept on getting frustrated with Simon for not reading the information and contract and messing up his pronouns, but then I thought, don't we all do that? We put the instruction manual aside to read later and never quite do. We start to read the online contract and eh give up at a certain point. And when we are learning new identifiers we often slip back into old habits. Simon eventually gets it right and finds the relationship and connections he was looking for. There were some parts of the ending I didn't agree with and thought were out of character, but overall I enjoyed it enough to get the next book in the series. I guess you could say this book was a blessing and filled with missteps that lead them to where they needed to be.

Good until the last hour

The book was a gamble turned out to be good. Until it got to the last hour of the book. The last few chapters felt like a add on not part of the story.

Wrong book.

Good book. A bit predictable, but books with aliens are always welcome. But when will Acquainted with the Night be released as an audio book? That book is a 10.

What A Great Book!

I was uncertain about getting this book for two reasons:
1) It’s not my kink.
2) The reviews I read were split. Either the reader loved it or the reader hated it, with little in between.
The unique story summary and fascinating reader responses to the book are why I decided to give it a chance.

I found myself enjoying this book immensely. I’m the kind of person who loves experiencing the emotions of the characters, the building of a bond between them. I love being able to peek into the minds of the characters. If you’re a person who hates having to sit through listening to a character’s thought process and chaotic emotions, then this might not be the book for you.

I also like that science fiction books allow an author the ability to dream up whatever technology they want in order to do anything they want. This author is new to me, and I was not disappointed in their creativity. However, if you aren’t interested in delving into how the advanced science and technology works in a new universe, then this might not be the book for you.

Even though it is not my kink, I still found connection and passion in the sex scenes. If you are someone who doesn’t keep an open mind for atypical sexual experiences, then this is not the book for you.

If you’ve read what I’ve had to say and are still interested, then I wholeheartedly recommend this book. I’m glad I read it and hope you will be to.

Fantastic Story

The story is amazing! There are parts that are very detailed so sometimes it is a bit slow but overall it is a wonderful love story. It is so kind, open minded, and full of just so many insights into contracts/law. It is absolutely fun, euecah moments, and finally ultimate true love.
