About this listen

Virginia Young Readers Program Award nominee

From the author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Dear Martin—which Angie Thomas, the bestselling author of The Hate U Give, called "a must read"—comes a pitch-perfect romance that examines class, privilege, and how a stroke of good luck can change an entire life.

Meet Rico: high school senior and afternoon-shift cashier at the Gas 'n' Go, who after school and work races home to take care of her younger brother. Every. Single. Day. When Rico sells a jackpot-winning lotto ticket, she thinks maybe her luck will finally change, but only if she—with some assistance from her popular and wildly rich classmate Zan—can find the ticket holder who hasn't claimed the prize. But what happens when have and have-nots collide? Will this investigative duo unite...or divide?

Nic Stone, the New York Times bestselling author of Dear Martin and Odd One Out, creates two unforgettable characters in one hard-hitting story about class, money—both too little and too much—and how you make your own luck in the world.

"[A] funny, captivating, and thoughtful tale for young readers about class privilege, class deprivation, and the politics of luck and love."—Ibram X. Kendi, The Atlantic

"A delightful, hilarious romance that digs into issues surrounding class. You'll laugh as much as you sigh while reading this novel about luck, love...and how having a little bit of both is more than enough."—Paste

GREAT STORY!

Great story. My 13 year old son and I love Nic Stone's work. She's SUPER cool in real life as well. About to purchase another of her audio books to listen to with my son. I love the unexpected commentary from unlikely voices!

All Bets Are On!

The way characters revealed their individual stories is amazing. I was pleasantly surprised by how the story developed and this is a perfect late middle grade to YA read. As for recommendations, I’d recommend to a teen who thinks their not good enough to be around people who have more resources, financial or otherwise. They’d be surprised at just how much their lives have in common.

Good story.

This is the 2nd book I've listened to by Nic Stone. Storyline was good. The story of Rico's life depicts how some people live today. struggling to make ends meet.
The narration could have been better. hard to distinguish who was talking unless the person's name was said.
Overall I would listen to it again.

Buyer beware!

This one was such a disappointment after Dear Martin, if I had listened to this one first I would never have tried DM thinking it would be just as bad. This book is full of every racial, poverty, rich kid cliche available and goes on and on about them. The main character has the biggest chip on her shoulder, which is the main theme of the book, it gets old fast. The male main character adds some pizazz to the story, but sadly not enough, his part could have been expanded beyond rich kid.

The two books are like night and day as far as the writing. I feel this was a rough (very rough) draft of a book that was thrown out to the publisher. The story line is all over the place, easy to 'see' the final result, which I figured out almost immediately. And I won't even start on the 'talking' inanimate objects, oh goodness. I thought maybe this might be aimed at a middle school audience, but there is quite a bit of sexual reference so maybe not? I don't know, but honestly could not wait for it to end, I hardly ever abandon a book before it is done, but almost did with this one. I'm on the fence if I will try another of her books.
