Publisher's summary

“A smart, taut, mind-blowing thriller full of heartbreak and betrayal that moves along at breakneck speed. Readers will be obsessed!”—Mary Kubica, New York Times bestselling author of Just The Nicest Couple

Everybody lies. Even the ones you think you know best of all . . .

Olivia Bender designs exquisite home interiors that satisfy the most demanding clients. But her own deepest desire can’t be fulfilled by marble counters or the perfect rug. She desperately wants to be a mother. Fertility treatments and IVF keep failing. And just when she feels she’s at her lowest point, the police deliver shocking news to Olivia and her husband, Park.

DNA results show that the prime suspect in a murder investigation is Park’s son. Olivia is relieved, knowing this is a mistake. Despite their desire, the Benders don’t have any children. Then comes the confession. Many years ago, Park donated sperm to a clinic. He has no idea how many times it was sold—or how many children he has sired.

As the murder investigation goes deeper, more terrible truths come to light. With every revelation, Olivia must face the unthinkable. The man she married has fathered a killer. But can she hold that against him when she keeps such dark secrets of her own?

This twisting, emotionally layered thriller explores the lies we tell to keep a marriage together—or break each other apart . . .

No likable or relatable people here

The further I got in this book the more I felt like showering. The main couple have such a dysfunctional relationship it's impossible to understand why they've stuck it out so long. The self-absorbed wife seems to hate everyone because she can't have a baby, including her husband and her friends who do have babies. All the characters have huge secrets that contribute to the problem(s) and make it hard to resolve. The constant flashbacks to the husband's twin (who has moved away) were frustrating. I am a twin and dislike stories that twist "twinship" to make a plot.

Solid listen

Kept me listening. Did not guess what was happening. Twists and turns didn't see coming.
Although everyone's infertility story is not the same, no one wants to feel alone. This is not a topic you usually hear about or if you do it usually ends with having a baby in the end, that is not always the case. Although it may be hard for some it made me feel heard and less alone.

Omg SO GOOD!!

Goodness gracious, I don’t think I’ve ever read a book that I hung onto every word as much as I did with this book! So so great! I’m now hooked onto this genre and author!

A new type of twisty mystery

No spoilers here. However, the situation in this story is probable. Fascinating to think about. Great narration which helped the story grow on me. I neither liked or disliked any of the characters.I am not a fan of precocious teenagers who seem to think that they can do anything they want behind their parents’ backs. I am hesitant about reading books by J.T. because of the repetitive suffering of female victims who are hidden while tortured raped and eventually executed. Not much of that here. The motive of the antagonist is not revealed. The ending definitely has multiple surprises….interesting

Excellent book!

J.T. Ellison is one of my favorite authors and I think this is her best book yet! It delves into the agony of miscarriage and infertility. It is a thrilling, suspenseful book with so many twists and turns that every time I thought I knew what was coming next I was wrong!

The ending….

This book was really good and kept me thoroughly entertained through the whole thing but the end was kind of.. boring. Could’ve done with a little more of a twist than there was. But overall, it was pretty good.
