About this listen

Invictus is a gripping, authentic and exciting audiobook of the Roman army from best-selling author Simon Scarrow. Not to be missed by fans of Conn Iggulden and Bernard Cornwell.

It is AD 54. The soldiers of the Roman army patrol a growing empire from the Mediterranean to the North Sea, from the Atlantic to the banks of the Nile. Rome brutally enforces its rule, and its legions are the most efficient and aggressive fighting force in the world. Two battle-scarred veterans of this army, Prefect Cato and Centurion Macro, have survived years of campaigning in Britannia and have been recalled to Rome.

Their time in the teeming, dangerously political city is short, and soon they are travelling with the Praetorian Guard to Spain, a restless colony where simmering tension in the face of Roman rule is aggravated by bitter rivalry amongst the natives. The challenges that face two old friends and their comrades in arms are unlike any they have seen before - in a land that declares itself unconquerable.

Another excellent performance

Great novel taking our boys to another part of the empire, where things are just not what they seem. Jonathan Keeble does his usual absolutely outstanding performance on this - another member of my household, hearing this and not knowing, thought several different people were narrating this, his voicing is so good. He paces Simon Scarrow's plot and tension extremely well and brings the characters of this book alive. This book is one in a particular story arc within the series. The next is out and is a must read (or listen).

Outstanding Roman military adventure

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone interested in Roman military history and adventure fiction,

Have you listened to any of Jonathan Keeble’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I am a great fan of Jonathan Keeble. He is a very talented narrator, maintaining an agreeable and steady voice throughout, as well as performing different voices credibly.

Any additional comments?

Having read many of Scarrow's novels, I must say this is one of the best.

Destroys a narrative

Making Catos wife infedelity known and rubbing it in his face. I cant handle that. This purely from my view. there was no foreshadowing, there was no bad part on Cato. There wasnt even any cause for it other than to free up Cato returning to Rome. Kill the mother in childbirth would have been better. As is I cant read another book. Had to stop a third of the way through this one. Probably wont ever read another Simon Scarrow book. Nad taste in my mouth.
