Publisher's summary

Every summer for two decades, Ted Leeson and a maverick group of close companions have returned to an old ranch house on the bench-land overlooking the Madison River. Trout and fly fishing may be at the heart of their ritual return, but their experience goes far beyond the fishing. Leeson contemplates both the human and natural landscape brilliantly: the fly-anglers’ passionate, ironic, and sometimes hilarious allegiances to what they do; the intriguing Madison Valley and its creatures and flowers; the trout town of Ennis; maps and their revelations; the “green-card” experience of living in a place in which you are not native; the nature of leisure. Full of wit, surprise, shrewd observation, and wisdom, this book tells a story about creating a place of temporary liberty, and inhabiting a world fashioned of your best imaginings, where you might, for a time, live the potencies of a place that you have shaped and has shaped you. No lover of the very best writing about fly fishing and the natural world can afford to miss this stunning book.

Editorial reviews

Ted Leeson is a smart, engaging guide for a singular exploration of the culture and the place he calls, "my own Montana". These lyrical essays are inspired by both the natural realities and conceptual imaginings he experiences while on an annual fly fishing with five friends in a western state, As performed by Kirby Heyborn - a multi-nominee for the Audie Award and winner of the American Library Association Odyssey Award for his audiobook narrations - this exploration of the culture and state of mind is full of wisdom, wit, whimsy, and just plain shrewd observation.

Great story about the Madison River

I loved this story!

It brought me right back to the river. Fish on and fun.

A lesson for Leeson: sometimes, less is more

I’ve enjoyed just about every fly-fishing book I’ve ever read, but I found Inventing Montana absolutely insufferable. Leeson overstuffs nearly every sentence with the most esoteric words he can think of - and as a result, the book is hollow, pretentious, over-written, overly philosophical, and obnoxious. The book reeks of insecurity and is zero fun.

Poor Narration.

I couldn't get past 1st chapter, the Narrator's tone of voice made it hard to get into this one.
