About this listen

"Beware that, when fighting monsters, you yourself do not become a monster. For, when you gaze long into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you." (Friedrich Nietzsche)

The Violet Darger series continues with this gripping novella Into the Abyss.

Will Violet Darger agree to a face-to-face meeting with the man who shot her? Still awaiting trial, the infamous serial killer Leonard Stump has hinted at the locations of additional bodies - more desert graves waiting to be uncovered. He wants to talk, but he has one condition. Violet Darger must be present at the interview.

Now, the pressure is on. Should Darger head to Vegas and sit down with Stump? Everyone else seems to think so.

It’s a chance to close some cases and give families closure, they say. A chance to learn something crucial about the criminal mind, they say. A chance to do something good.

So, why does Darger feel like it’s all going to go terribly wrong?

While the Violet Darger novels can be listened to in any order, we recommend listening to this short after having listened to the earlier books in the series.

Violet Darger series

I've definitely enjoyed reading this series. But I have issues with how reckless and impulsive the protagonist can be!!! Sometimes it's too predictable. Also the narration is just ok, not the most enthusiastic or believable narration! Just average. I would love to see a lot more diversity in the books....I mean don't bad and good things happen to black, Latino etc...people!? And we also work in law enforcement, and are intelligent! But overall a good series, very similar to Patricia Cornwell, who also shows lack of ability for diversity!!!

Violet closes the Leonard Stumpf chapter

Into the Abyss follows Violet Darger in her continued employment with Prescott Consulting and her indecision about going back to the FBI. However, her latest assignment has her confronting Leonard Stumpf, to say any more about this story would risk providing spoilers, and as a Violet Darger fan that would be unconscionable. If you are a fan of the Violet Darger stories this is a must read, while it is a quick read it is filled with content that cannot be missed! As always, Kate Marcin's narration truly brings this story to life.

Bridge Story

While there was some interesting information and background, this is really just a story to bridge from the last regular novel to the next one.

Good narration.

Love the Darger/Loshak Stories

Once again Vargus and McBain grab you by the throat and drag you into the world of serial killers and the people who hunt them.

The story is a page-turner, which forgives the slightly less wonderful narrator. A little cardboard for my personal preference.

Well worth a listen. Waiting anxiously for the next book in the series.

Darger closes a door.

What do you do when a narcissist true to holds you bound to them. And that's your boss.

While in hiatus from the FBI Violet works for Prescott Consulting. Only to find herself face to face with serial killer Leonard Stumpf. Once again playing a psychological game of cat and mouse. This time will end their relationship.
