About this listen

More than anything, Tom Raines wants to be important, though his shadowy life is anything but that. For years, Tom's drifted from casino to casino with his unlucky gambler of a dad, gaming for their survival. Keeping a roof over their heads depends on a careful combination of skill, luck, con artistry, and staying invisible.

Then one day, Tom stops being invisible. Someone's been watching his virtual-reality prowess, and he's offered the incredible - a place at the Pentagonal Spire, an elite military academy. There, Tom's instincts for combat will be put to the test and if he passes, he'll become a member of the Intrasolar Forces, helping to lead his country to victory in World War III. Finally, he'll be someone important: a superhuman war machine with the tech skills that every virtual-reality warrior dreams of. Life at the Spire holds everything that Tom's always wanted - friends, the possibility of a girlfriend, and a life where his every action matters - but what will it cost him?

Gripping and provocative, S. J. Kincaid's futuristic thrill ride of a debut crackles with memorable characters, tremendous wit, and a vision of the future that asks startling, timely questions about the melding of humanity and technology.

love Kincaid, great narrator

I have read Insignia in the past, maybe 4 years ago, and I knew I liked the series but didn't remember much about it. This is one of the few series of books I am willing to listen to after having read it before. I am not the kind of person to read or watch anything more than once, but this series is worth the listen through a second time.

The narrator, Lincoln Hoppe, is one of the better narrators I have found on Audible. His voice isnt obnoxious, he is animated but not over the top like some, and he uses slightly different voices for each character. About the only downside I found is the slight edits that were made to the audio files were clearly read in a different studio or using different recording devices. Such a subtle difference hit my ears fairly hard, but it didn't detract from the story in any way.

Wow, just wow...

Loved it, just bought the second book. This book may just have become my #2. Ive already sent my recommendations to most off my friends. I'm not going to spoil the book at all but if you like sifi, deception, mind games, twist, and a unknown hero. Then this is your book.

Funny

Good plot; memorable characters. A nice sci-fi thriller with plenty of humor throughout. Narrated very well.

A wonderfully exciting story.

Tom, the main character of tail, is relatable (At least to me) on a personal level. The colorful cast of characters that begin to surround him througfht the story ranges widely. From big dumb goons, to downright diabolical masterminds. I genuenly couldn't predict what was going to happen next, and that made it all the more exciting and satisfying as it got closer and closer to the end. On more than one occatuion I was gitty, sad, happy, angry, and pissed off. I'd say any book that can genuenly get someone to feel so many different kinds of emotions, is amazing. I'm jumping at the thought of listening to the next book, very soon.

Contender Of The Best

This book is number 79 that I have read this year. I would put it right up there in the top five next to Ready Player One and Ender’s Game.

Good story, Good reading, One minor complaint.

The story was incredible, same with the tripple hitting twist in thr final act. The only thing I saw that was shoddy was how Lincoln couldn't really show anger in his voice. it was hard to believe that it was anger until he said that it was anger.

The narration was fantastic.

This hit my Ender's Game hunger that I get every few years. The story was quite good, but the narration stole the show. I admit that this story had its tropes, but was still quite enjoyable.
