Publisher's summary

Don't miss this "impossible to put down" (Buzzfeed) novel with deadly stakes, thrilling twists, and juicy secrets - perfect for fans of One of Us Is Lying and Knives Out.

Avery Grambs has a plan for a better future: Survive high school, win a scholarship, and get out. But her fortunes change in an instant when billionaire Tobias Hawthorne dies and leaves Avery virtually his entire fortune. The catch? Avery has no idea why - or even who Tobias Hawthorne is.

To receive her inheritance, Avery must move into sprawling, secret passage-filled Hawthorne House, where every room bears the old man's touch - and his love of puzzles, riddles, and codes. Unfortunately for Avery, Hawthorne House is also occupied by the family that Tobias Hawthorne just dispossessed. This includes the four Hawthorne grandsons: Dangerous, magnetic, brilliant boys who grew up with every expectation that one day, they would inherit billions.

Heir apparent Grayson Hawthorne is convinced that Avery must be a con-woman, and he's determined to take her down. His brother, Jameson, views her as their grandfather's last hurrah: A twisted riddle, a puzzle to be solved. Caught in a world of wealth and privilege, with danger around every turn, Avery will have to play the game herself just to survive.

Reader Distracted from Story

The story is interesting, but it is hard to concentrate through the bad voice actor. She normal voice sounds like a Disney villain. Almost every line of the book is read like an evil step mom is speaking. The only exception is when she does her southern accent. Then it sounds like a drunk prospector at the entrance to a 1849 gold mine. Get a new reader! For the love of God!

can't stand the "southern drawl" but A+ story

Good YA story, first installment, doesn't stand alone but as part of a series. Narrator's "southern" accent is overdone so I'll finish the remainder of the series in print.

I’m glad I didn’t buy this book

It was okay I didn’t really enjoy the scavenger hunt or the ending. It got a little painful to listen to but I’m bored at work so I finished it!

Glad I did

After Raised by Wolves ending I promised to never read another book by this author and I hadn't until now. I loved the description and I couldn't not. I'm so glad I did. I loved it. cinnamon followed the clues right along with them. I did know what the biggest secret would be from the beginning but I still enjoyed how it unfolded.

Set 'Em Up, Bartender.

At the risk of being repetitive to a million other reviews, if you dig "Knives Out" you'll probably enjoy this book. Slightly less mature and less who-dun-it. Slightly more puzzle and clue-esque.

As I neared the end of the book I had to think, "Can I really commit to another two books? It feels like one was enough." And then the author threw a couple more twists in at the last. Possible. Second.

Dagnabbit.

Guess I'm in for another two rounds. Set 'em up, bartender.

I'd rate this a PG for mild swearing, mildly adult themes, and some violence.

We listened to this over a few days. It's a fun and immersive story. Can't wait to check out what else the author has written.
