About this listen

This program features an author's note read by Nora Roberts, sharing her inspiration for The Lost Bride Trilogy and the incredible personal history behind these stories.

Inheritance is the first in The Lost Bride Trilogy by #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts—a tale of tragedies, loves found and lost, and a family haunted for generations.

1806: Astrid Poole sits in her bridal clothes, overwhelmed with happiness. But before her marriage can be consummated, she is murdered, and the circle of gold torn from her finger. Her last words are a promise to Collin never to leave him…

Graphic designer Sonya MacTavish is stunned to learn that her late father had a twin he never knew about—and that her newly discovered uncle, Collin Poole, has left her almost everything he owned, including a majestic Victorian house on the Maine coast, which the will stipulates she must live in for at least three years. Her engagement recently broken, she sets off to find out why the boys were separated at birth—and why it was all kept secret until a genealogy website brought it to light.

Trey, the young lawyer who greets her at the sprawling clifftop manor, notes Sonya’s unease—and acknowledges that yes, the place is haunted…but just a little. Sure enough, Sonya finds objects moved and music playing out of nowhere. She sees a painting by her father inexplicably hanging in her deceased uncle’s office, and a portrait of a woman named Astrid, whom the lawyer refers to as “the first lost bride.” It’s becoming clear that Sonya has inherited far more than a house. She has inherited a centuries-old curse, and a puzzle to be solved if there is any hope of breaking it…

Critic reviews

"Romance queen Roberts takes all of the beloved elements of classic gothic romances, including a marvelously atmospheric old mansion as well as a spunky heroine starting over in life, then puts her own inventive spin on things... an incisively etched cast of characters and a spooktacular plot that will keep readers up long past their regular bedtimes."—Booklist (starred)

"Roberts is in fine form here. Her lush, ethereal world of ghosts and spirits is the perfect foil for Sonya’s down-to-earth, almost spartan manner... Exciting launch for Roberts’ new trilogy."—Kirkus Reviews (starred)

A return to the Nora Roberts of old

In recent books Nora has lost her magical touch. But in "Inheritance" she appears to have recovered the magic. I hope the sequels don't disappoint. I am hopeful her efforts to prepare the second book in the trilogy won't take too long. This book ends on a cliffhanger, but in this case it appears justified if book two picks up exactly where book one ends.

A wonderful and spooky start to a new trilogy

Brittany Pressley’s performance of this spooky story was enjoyable. Each of the main characters’ voices were distinct and made it easy to follow the story. This first book gave us a lot of to think about and a lot happened - a surprise inheritance from a long lost uncle, a broken engagement, a family curse, ghosts and the start of new romances and friendships. All the ingredients for an enjoyable listen. Again, Nora Roberts never disappoints.

I’ve read so many of Nora’s books, but I’m absolutely in love with this. The story is so good….I’m in for the long haul. I love this haunted house mystery!!! How long do I have to wait for the 2nd installment????

The Characters alive and deceased were engaging and drew you in.

I enjoyed the concept of the story and was completely absorbed in every word. I dislike that I have to wait a YEAR for the next one! 6 months seems more fair!

Wait! What Happens Next!

I didn't realize this was a new Trilogy and this was the first book that was just released. It's sooo good! But now I'm left hanging, wondering what happened. Ugh! I'm so frustrated!
