About this listen
"The devil is in the details and David Buzan masterfully brings all of those details to bear in creating one hell of a novel."–Tom McCaffrey, bestselling author of The Claire Trilogy
The most highly decorated Native American in the history of the United States Cavalry, Jolon Winterhawk is a combat veteran of countless bloody skirmishes during the American Civil War. He's a man of honor, struggling with sworn allegiances to two different nations-the country he's sworn to protect, and the tribe he's promised to defend.
During a top-secret mission to escort a military gold train through Oregon's rugged Cascade Mountains, Winterhawk emerges as the sole survivor of a large-scale ambush. Duty-bound to complete the assignment and honor the sacrifices of his fallen comrades, Winterhawk makes the fateful decision to personally deliver the precious cargo of gold.
While Winterhawk embarks on a treacherous wagon trip across miles of dangerous wilderness, an aerial unit from the Army Balloon Corps has been dispatched to locate the missing train. Soon, the aeronauts seize upon a diabolical opportunity-stealing the gold for themselves.
Outnumbered and outgunned, Winterhawk soon finds himself in the fiercest battle of his life. But he quickly discovers that man is not his greatest enemy. Because there's something else lurking deep in those woods. A monster of myth, a horrifying creature of enormous size.

Story
When two marines and their corpsman reunite after a decade apart, they find themselves caught up in the mystery of their former squad leader’s disappearance. With little more to go on than a handful of disturbing charcoal sketches and the whispers of a local legend, they plunge into the depths of one of America’s last truly wild places. But the trees themselves begin to whisper dark secrets. Secrets of trafficking and violence. Of rotten science and blood. Of something else that lurks in the shadows of the pines—something ancient, savage, and hungry.

A Lair of Fear
Into the Lair of Legends is a well-written well-paced thriller set in a post-civil war era. Author, Dave Buzan delivers a fast and thrilling account of Native American Jolon Winterhawk, a Union soldier who must choose between the honor of country and the honor of his family.
He encounters more than he ever envisioned protecting a gold shipment that had been intercepted. Death abounds, the man fought nearly everything imaginable and possibly unimaginable. His fear was masked by his heroism as one battle after another only hardened his soul.
Buzan offers his debut novel as articulately and brilliantly as any. This is a heart-pounding novel that will need and deserve your complete attention.

Fun historical fantasy
it took me a couple chapters to warm up to the narrator, but once I did, I really enjoyed his heavy, dramatic style.
You not only need to suspend disbelief for this one, you have to abandon it, but when you do, you'll enjoy yourself.
The historical points add to the enjoyment, though don't buy this for a history (or chemistry) lesson. Buy it for its over-the-top thrills and, at times, graphic gore.
Pure shoot-em-up, blow-em-up, rip-em-up entertainment. Think Predator meets the Last of the Mohicans....

Fun listen!
I listened to the whole thing in one day on a long drive… Fast paced action throughout, with interesting lead character and settings. While this is not a genre of books I normally read, I am looking forward to more from David Buzan!

I live in Asia. The main character complained about white people non stop. Took me out of the story and I’m not even white. Yes I know back then, blah blah blah. Read the Winterfox Journals. Same idea but expertly written that it doesn’t sound racist.
