About this listen
From animals long believed extinct, to monsters that we thought never existed—this book acts as both a guide to, and an unbelievably true account of, legendary cryptids.
Cryptozoologist Richard Freeman has spent years researching and tracking down mythical monsters. In this book, he recounts riveting monster hunt stories, globetrotting adventures from the dense forests of Sumatra on the trail of a mystery ape known as the orang-pendek, to Tasmania in search of the thylacine or Tasmanian wolf. Every corner of Earth has its own monster—even the traceless Gobi Desert as he searches for the Mongolian death worm, a creature so feared by the nomads that it can send a whole community into a panic.
The author provides you with excellent advice on how to carry out your own cryptozoological expeditions from scratch. This includes advice on what equipment to take, inoculations, how to choose which mythical animals to hunt, planning ahead and the importance of getting good local guides to name a few.
Inside, you’ll find:
- A deep dive into whether extinct animals are truly extinct
- A journey beyond a textbook definition of the world’s largest animals
- A ton of advice, including information on how to join the Centre for Fortean Zoology
Join a fascinating adventure on the hunt for mythical animals!

Meldrum reports on the work of a team of experts from a wide variety of fields who were assembled to examine the evidence for a large, yet undiscovered, North American primate. He reviews the long history of this mystery and explains all the scientific pros and cons in a clear and accessible style.

They live in shadows - deep in the forest, late in the night, in the dark recesses of our minds. They're spoken of in stories and superstitions, relics of an unenlightened age, old wives' tales, passed down through generations. Yet no matter how wary and jaded we have become, as individuals or as a society, a part of us remains vulnerable to them: werewolves and wendigos, poltergeists and vampires, angry elves and vengeful spirits.

Story
The US has been invaded - if many dozens of eyewitnesses are to be believed - by upright, canine creatures that look like traditional werewolves and act as if they own our woods, fields, and highways. Sightings from coast to coast dating back to the 1930s compel us to ask exactly what these beasts are, and what they want. Researcher, author, and newspaper reporter Linda S. Godfrey has been tracking the man-wolf since the early 1990s. In Real Wolfmen, she presents the only large-scale cataloging and investigation of reports of modern sightings of anomalous, upright canids.

Story
For more than a century, reports of a strange beast known as the Fouke Monster have circulated among the locals in southern Arkansas. Described as a large hairy man-like creature, it's said to haunt the vast Sulphur River Bottoms as it travels the secluded waterway known as Boggy Creek. Over the years, the creature has been seen by numerous witnesses including respected citizens, experienced hunters, famous musicians, and even a police officer. The encounters were often so shocking, they served as inspiration for the classic horror film, The Legend of Boggy Creek, by Charles B. Pierce.

These are the stories that defy conventional logic. The proverbial vanished without a trace incidences, which happen a lot more (and a lot closer to your backyard) than almost anyone thinks. These are the missing whose situations are the hardest on loved ones left behind. The cases that are an embarrassment for park superintendents, rangers, and law enforcement charged with Search & Rescue.

I really enjoyed the section on the thylocine. The fact that Tasmanian wolves likely are not extinct is awesome news and the evidence presented is compelling to me

Fantastic
An absolute gem of a book for anyone who even remotely enjoys true, crytpozoology. The book is down to earth and realistic about the scientific search for proof of new animals and the revival of those previously thought to be extinct.

Great Book on Cryptozoology Hunts!
Great book on cryptozoology, or more accurately, a realistic look at things that do exist and were either written off as 'extinct' too early(Tasmanian Tiger) or are just on the cusp of being explained (Orangpende). Presented in a factual manner with some lovely travel tales in-between, the only thing that saddened me about this book was when it ended. I wish there were more!

Gross comments about women
The author consistently makes comments about women’s attractiveness even though it has no effect on the book. Gross.
