About this listen

When a magical plague is released in a Depression-era New York soup kitchen, private detective Alex Lockerby finds himself in a desperate hunt to catch a madman before he can strike again.

His investigations lead Alex to a famous thief, a daring heist, and the search for a mythic book of ancient magic, but none of that brings him any closer to finding the man responsible for the massacre. With the police and New York’s Council of Sorcerers desperate to find the culprit, Alex becomes a suspect himself, thanks to his ties to the priest who ran the soup kitchen.

Now Alex has his book of spells, a pack of matches and four days to find out where the plague came from, or that authorities will hang the crime squarely on him.

great detective story

the story was fantastic with all the twists and turns. Vic Mignogna really killed it with his voice work and made the characters feel even more real.

Interesting

A little slow in spots but a really good story. Some of the plot twists surprised me, and that doesn’t happen much any more. I would recommend to anyone that likes ‘noir’ or a light mystery.

Perfect for Fans of Jim Butcher's Dresden Files

A well-written, thoroughly enjoyable, immersive, magical noir mystery. It's like the television series Supernatural starring Sam Spade from the Maltese Falcon. I discovered the author on BookTok and was intrigued by the concept of an arcane detective specializing in runewriting. My first adventure with this detective was not disappointing. I will definitely check out more titles in the series.

Good Book

This was a good story in an alternate world. I very much enjoyed this story and the characters peopling it. Narrator does a good job with the various characters voices and the entire storyline.

Fantastic journey from beginning to end!

This was a wonderful story! To be honest, the narration by Vic Mignogna was the selling point for me, but once the world starting taking shape, I was in love! I haven't experienced a great detective story in quite some time. Plus it had magic in it, and that itself was the icing on the cake for me. If a sequel is planned, I'm ready for it!

I can't help but keep listening

The story is well written and Vic's voice work is surprisingly good even compared to his previous roles. The story leaves me wanting more with each chapter. As far as the voice work, I had no idea he could do a female voice as well as he could, not easy for guys, and he actually threw multiple curve balls with his voice in that he sometimes became completely unrecognizable. This is coming from a long time fan of Vic Mignogna, so I have quite a bit of experience listening to his voice.

A delightful fantasy adventure

Willis weaves an immersive tale of magic, intrigue and conspiracy into a 1930s retro-historical detective story in the tradition of Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe.

Vic Mignogna's read of it, brings every character masterfully to life. It has the character of period radio theater with a full cast but executed by a single, brilliantly talented voice actor who somehow manages to keep dozens of unique character voices distinct and recognizable, switching seamlessly between them throughout the performance.

I've given this two, back to back listens.
The first, to enjoy the story. The second just to listen to the performance of the characters.
It is really well done. Story and performance, both.

BRAVO
