Acerca de esta escucha

The electrifying new thriller from New York Times bestseller Stephen Hunter takes you deep inside the mind of the most notorious serial killer of all time: Jack the Ripper.

In the fall of 1888, Jack the Ripper slaughtered five prostitutes in London's seamy Whitechapel District. He did not just kill - he ripped with a butcher's glee - and then, after the particularly gruesome slaying of Mary Jane Kelly, he disappeared. For 127 years, Jack has haunted the dark corners of our imagination, the paradigm of the psychotic killer. We remember him not only for his crimes, but because, despite one of the biggest dragnets in London history, he was never caught.

I, Ripper is a vivid reimagining of Jack's personal story entwined with that of an Irish journalist who covered the case, knew the principals, charted the investigation, and at last, stymied, went off in a bold new direction. These two men stalk each other through a city twisted in fear of the madman's blade, a cat-and-mouse game that brings to life the sounds and smells of the fleshpot tenderloin of Whitechapel and all the lurid acts that fueled the Ripper headlines.

Dripping with intrigue, atmosphere, and diabolical twists, this is a magnificent psychological thriller from perennial New York Times bestseller Stephen Hunter, who the San Francisco Examiner calls "one of the best storytellers of his generation."

Very well done! The Speaker is wonderful. The tale of Jack the Ripper is unfolded, day by day, from different perspectives. Very entertaining!!

An enlightening tale of history I thought I knew!!

Would you try another book from Stephen Hunter and/or Michael Page?

Yes.

Any additional comments?

At first I thought ugh, a gore-fest. But the book improved as it went on and became a clever, if a bit far fetched blend of history and fiction. An enjoyable read overall.

Pretty clever

After so much time has passed, the story of Jack the Ripper, and the unanswered questions he left behind still intrigue us. This is a very good work of historical fiction that expertly fills in gaps, leaving one scared and satisfied.

Imaginative and keeps your attention

Stephen Hunter has done it again. What a genius of story telling. His use of history to intrigue the reader is masterful.
Bravo....

Bravo!

The story follows a fast pace, one to sit and listen to rather than while while doing anything else. The old English nariatation by the reader takes the listener back to the time as we imagine it to be.

A very different Steven Hunter tale.

I've read all his novels and he is excellent with military/spy suspense. I, Ripper is well outside this genre and yet Hunter has creative and well done story.

Performance was top notch; could not have been done by a better person!!

Not a typical Hunter story although typically well done.

This story is not for the squeamish, anything but. The insights, dialogue and psychological rapportage are amazing, truly! At first the gruesome details were a bit much and then as the timeline develops one begins to understand the clarity of thought, accuracy of action and history being told. The discovery of Jeb's identity was another clincher as to this fantastic story and realization that there is much to believe at the end. Oddly, I had been reading A. Conan Doyle's stories but dropped all to finish this story. Thanks so much and have already pre-ordered your next book Stephen and only two or so more of your listed stories to go. Also, the reading was done quite well.

One Of The Best Stories Told!

What did you like best about I, Ripper? What did you like least?

This event has been over used....as with the Kennedy book I think Hunter has gotten lazy and used events we are all over familiar with and added nothing of interest

What was most disappointing about Stephen Hunter’s story?

slow

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

yes, I could be a better movie than book

disappointing

Not as engaging as would be expected for such a horrific time in history. Jack the Ripper is a fascinating topic for me, I have even visited the White Chapel district in London and retraced the murder scenes of Jack. I was expecting a little more suspense, drama, anything! But it never came. Also, the narrator was a bit overly dramatic in his readings than what the story called for. I stopped listening 5 or 6 chapters shy of the end because I was so bored with the story and zoned out. Very disappointed.

Mediocre at best

I found the story to be interesting. the language was believable for the period. There were short periods of rambling but not to the point where I wanted to turn the story off. It was definitely a new spin on the Ripper. I'd say worth the credit.

A good spin on an old story
