Being in a relationship without knowing how to share your feelings and receive your partner’s feelings in useful ways is like jumping into a pool without knowing how to swim. You can flail around all you want, but it’s not going to keep you afloat for very long—you need to be able to move in any direction at will. Like swimming, knowing how to share your feelings and respond to your partner's feelings will move your relationship in the direction you want: toward more intimacy, closeness, connection, and trust.

At work, we’re taught to lead the conversation. On social media, we shape our personal narratives. At parties, we talk over one another. So do our politicians. We’re not listening. And no one is listening to us. Despite living in a world where technology allows constant digital communication and opportunities to connect, it seems no one is really listening or even knows how. And it’s making us lonelier, more isolated, and less tolerant than ever before. A listener by trade, New York Times contributor Kate Murphy wanted to know how we got here.

Negative thinking—it seems to have no end. The question is, can anything be done about it? Negative thinking is a self-perpetuating mechanism. Negative thinking fuels more negative thinking, which in turn fuels even more. Around and around it goes, never losing steam or momentum. All the while, you’re utterly fatigued and exhausted. Ten years can go by, and the mind-numbing cycle still will not have stopped. Because it’s self-sustaining, negative thinking only grows stronger with each passing month, year, and decade. Can it be stopped?

Story
Superheroes don't start from glorious beginnings. Their origins are almost always marked by traumatic events that leave them helpless and scared. Batman witnessed his parents' murder. Superman was sent away from his dying planet with no one to guide him as he grew up. Orphaned Catwoman was forced to steal food to survive on the streets of Gotham. What makes these superheroes super is their determination to not be defined by helplessness. They embrace their origins, their flaws, and their mistakes and strive every day to become the best versions of themselves.

Everyone Should Practice these Principles
This book is very well performed. The author is clear and succinct. He does not try to streatch a few solid ideas into 20 chapters, when he can cover them in a handful. This book has a focused principle it describes, then it instructs you on how to implement the principle using several techniques and examples. I really enjoyed the style and structure of this book. It is very user friendly and teaches communication strategies to help understand and better communicate with others, while validating their emotions. This book highlights something society has forgetten, that we are allowed to feel.

Remarkably clear summary of the principles of restorative communication
Well done to the author/narrator for a clearly written and detailed primer on effective and restorative communication.

Awesome and straight forward
Finally a simple book for people wanting a simple explanation. I loved the layout of the book, the process, and examples. He did a great job explaining social skills...way better than an academic discussion like so many other self help books. Will read again and again. Thanks!

so good I bought it twice!
I love this so much that I ordered the paperback before I even finished the audiobook!
I'm a therapist by profession - a job that requires a masters degree - and despite all my years of training, I've never had the opportunity to experience such an in depth discussion on the power of validation. Seems backwards, since that's a big chunk of my job! I'm so excited to use this book as a refresher for myself, but also as a referral for clients (especially parents) to learn more about this absolutely essential communication tool!
I cannot recommend this book enough to anyone who wants to learn how to be a better listener. It's all but guaranteed to improve your relationships, but it'll also give you you some insight into why some relationships just grow stagnant. It's just as important to FEEL heard as it is to truly hear others. Let this masterpiece be your guide!

Just as the title says, these are great tips and steps to help your audience know how much you understand their point if view, even if you don't agree with them.
