About this listen
“A beautiful and poetic book about the many ways pain, and love in all its forms, leaves a lasting stain.”–Kathleen Glasgow, #1 bestselling author of Girl in Pieces
“A brilliant book about what we survive—and how. Visceral, wrenching, and beautiful.”–John Green, #1 bestselling author of The Fault in Our Stars
“A tender, heartfelt story about the wounds childhood trauma can leave on its survivors. The sense of powerlessness—and redemption—will stay with you.”–Jojo Moyes, #1 bestselling author of Me Before You
“Heartfelt, human and true. I loved it.”–Markus Zusak, #1 bestselling author of The Book Thief
Fish Creek, Wisconsin—Beautiful. Quiet. Isolated. Anonymous. It’s all that nineteen-year-old Elisabeth needs, and everything she wants. Cloistered in her tiny cabin, Elisabeth is determined to be alone, hiding from her memories and making sure that no one can ever hurt her again.
But when a massive snowstorm strikes, plunging the town into darkness, Elisabeth finally allows herself to accept help from her neighbor, Noah, the town’s young sheriff. Forced to show him more vulnerability than she ever intended, Elisabeth realizes she can no longer outrun the scars of her childhood, and facing the darkness might be exactly what she needs to let the light in.
In a searing own-voices story accented by poignant childhood flashbacks and stunning poetry, Allison Sweet Grant’s young adult debut is a quietly powerful portrait of a young woman’s journey to confront the medical trauma inflicted to “fix” her—and heal her heart in the process. An emotional coming-of-age story about a young woman running away from herself, yet grasping to find a way back. Deeply moving, authentically raw, and humming with the possibility of a new love.

Story
Whether it’s anxiety about going to the doctor, boiling rage when we’re stuck in traffic, or devastation after a painful break-up, our lives are filled with situations that send us spiraling. But as difficult as our emotions can be, they are also a superpower. Far from being “good” or “bad,” emotions are information. When they’re activated in the right ways and at the right time, they function like an immune system, alerting us to our surroundings, telling us how to react to a situation, and helping us make the right choices. But how do we make our emotions work for us rather than against us?

Divorce was everything for Haley Mlotek. As a child, she listened to her twice-divorced grandmother tell stories about her “husbands.” As a pre-teen, she answered the phones for her mother’s mediation and marriage counseling practice and typed out the paperwork for couples in the process of leaving each other. She grew up with the sense that divorce was an outcome to both resist and desire. But when she herself went on to marry—and then divorce—the man she had been with for twelve years, suddenly, she had to reconsider her generation’s inherited understanding of the institution.

This delightful audiobook - one of Amazon's 2019 Holiday Gift Picks and Most Anticipated Books - is designed to start conversations with kids about generosity. In the tradition of Goodnight Gorilla, the words are intentionally spare. The audiobook is meant to be listened to interactively, with adults posing questions so kids can guess what's happening (and why). Praised by both parents and teachers for sparking imagination and eliciting discussion, the story can be interpreted differently in every family, by every child, and reinterpreted many times over.

On a bright spring afternoon, Ciara Fay makes a split-second decision that will change everything. Grabbing an armful of clothes off the clothesline, she straps her two young daughters into her car and drives away. Head spinning, all she knows for certain is that home is no longer safe—and that this time, when she leaves, she must stay away. A deadly and unprecedented virus is spreading. But those who survive it experience long-term effects no one has ever seen before: utter contentment. Soon after infection, people find the stress, depression, greed, and other negative feelings that used to weigh them down are gone. More and more people begin to revel in the mass unburdening. But not everyone. People in power—who depend on malcontents and prey on the insecure to sell their products, and convince others they need more, new, faster, better everything—know this new state of being is bad for business.

For decades, Amy ran. Through the dirt roads of Amarillo, Texas, where she grew up; to the campus of the University of Virginia, as a student athlete; on the streets of New York, where she built her adult life; through marriage, motherhood, and a thriving career. To outsiders, it all looked, in many ways, perfect. But Amy was running from something—a secret she was keeping not only from her family and friends, but unconsciously from herself. “You’re here, but you’re not here,” her daughter said to her one night. “Where are you, Mom?”

Poignant, gorgeous novel
This is a beautifully written coming of age story about a young woman who went through medical trauma as a child. Anyone who has gone through any kind of difficult time could connect with the story. The prose is gorgeous and evocative. And the author’s narration is truly excellent and emotional. Would give it 10 stars if I could!

A Must-Listen—Beautifully Narrated by the Author
This audiobook was exceptional. The story itself is deeply emotional and beautifully written, but hearing it narrated by the author, Allison Sweet Grant, made it even more impactful. Her enunciation was clear, and you could hear the depth of feeling in her voice, making every moment even more powerful. It felt incredibly personal, and I was moved to tears multiple times. If you’re considering reading this book, I highly recommend listening to it as well—it’s an unforgettable experience.
