About this listen

What The Daily Show is to evening news, The Colbert Report is to personality-driven pundit shows. Stephen Colbert brings his sarcastic charm to a half-hour report, tackling the important issues of the day and telling his guests why their opinions are just plain wrong. Stephen stands for "truthiness" and his American right to copyright that word and claim ownership of it.

The author describes his audiobook as a simple audiobook from a simple mind: Stephen Colbert's. In plain conversational language, not to mention the occasional grunt and/or whistle, Stephen explains his take on the most pressing concerns of our culture: faith, family...hygiene.

Why now? Stephen fears America has lost its balls and he hopes to re-ballify us...even the ladies. Ladies can have balls: lady-balls too. Stephen likes to call those "Thatchers". Stephen will show how he got his mammoth swinging sack with tales of courage and vital documents from his own life, including the Mother's Day card he made at age six, disputed credit-card bills, and putt-putt score cards - all the major milestones.

Colbert is genious but....

The book is a fantastic outlook, sometimes sarcastic, and always subtly critical. My lower rating was simply due to the fact that I feel a lot was lost by abridging the book. The only reason that I bought the abridged version was because an unabridged version was not available.

A feast for the senses?

If you read the book whilst listening to the audio version, you get the truth TWICE at the SAME TIME! If there is a braille version, I will buy that and learn braille so that I can see, hear, and feel it at the same time. If only there was a way to taste and smell it as well. If you know of a way, let me know.

Underwhelming

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I would recommend someone watch Colbert's show. It wasn't as funny or entertaining as his show. I really disliked how the "Colbert Speaks For Me" sections went. They were often not very funny, and kind of painful to get through.

Has I Am America (And So Can You!) turned you off from other books in this genre?

I am still interested in this genre, I just don't think I liked how this book translated to audio. Interestingly, I think I would rather have read it. There's just something about the audio-only aspect that wasn't appealing. I found myself hoping that traffic would turn to stop-and-go so I could fast forward past those sections.

Was I Am America (And So Can You!) worth the listening time?

I would listen to it as filler, if there wasn't anything else you were interested in. Colbert does an entertaining job narrating, but it still just falls a little flat.

amazingly funny

what else could this be other than ridiculously funny. it was funny to read in paperback, and with the voices and personalities we are so familiar with, it only gets better.

Where is the rest?

I too bought the book as soon as it was avalible. It is a great listen. My only problem with the book is it is abridged. I would like to have had the option of the unabridged version of this very funny book.

Colbert is one funny guy

Stephen Colbert plays his right wing, Christian, sexually repressed, absurdly jingoiitic, mother fixated, incredibly shallow alter ego brilliantly.

Being a right wing, Christian who loves his mommy
.... I found this a hilarious read.

Funny always trumps politics for me.

I also strongly recommend Ann Coulters new book for another take on things.
