Publisher's summary

A must-have resource for anyone who lives or works with young kids, with an introduction by Adele Faber, coauthor of the international best-seller The Boston Globe dubbed "The Parenting Bible".

For over 35 years, parents have turned to How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk for its respectful and effective solutions to the unending challenges of raising children. Now, in response to growing demand, Adele's daughter, Joanna Faber, along with Julie King, tailor How to Talk's powerful communication skills to children ages two to seven.

Faber and King, each a parenting expert in her own right, share their wisdom accumulated over years of conducting How To Talk workshops with parents and a broad variety of professionals. With a lively combination of storytelling, cartoons, and fly-on-the-wall discussions from their workshops, they provide concrete tools and tips that will transform your relationship with the young kids in your life.

What do you do with a little kid who...won't brush her teeth...screams in his car seat...pinches the baby...refuses to eat vegetables...runs rampant in the supermarket? Organized according to common challenges and conflicts, this book is an essential emergency first-aid manual of communication strategies, including a chapter that addresses the special needs of children with sensory processing and autism spectrum disorders.

This user-friendly guide will empower parents and caregivers to forge rewarding, joyful relationships with terrible two-year-olds, truculent three-year-olds, ferocious four-year-olds, foolhardy five-year-olds, self-centered six-year-olds, and the occasional semi-civilized seven-year-old. And, it will help little kids grow into self-reliant big kids who are cooperative and connected to their parents, teachers, siblings, and peers.

Did not like the narrator!

I own a paper copy of this book so I was excited to see that the narrated version was on Audible. However, the narrator of this book is terrible! She uses a very condescending and pretentious tone that negates the original authors purpose and meaning. I couldn’t even make it through the first chapter listening to her voice.

Incredibly practical and effective parenting book!

I've spent a lot of precious hours reading books about parenting my 2 children. Hands down this is by far the best, most practical, most immediately effective and useful book I have found on the topic. I only wish I had been equipped with these tools earlier. I recommend this book to every parent of littles! I have also purchased a paper copy to keep on my nightstand for quick reference/refresher skimming on specific topics and struggles as the needs arise.

Life changing!

This is totally worth the listen. It's filled with tons of useful tools to help maintain positive relationships with your kids while getting them to do what you need them to do. These techniques have already been invaluable to me, with two toddlers.

Useful information

The atrong point is having empathy for the kids. Which can be easy to ignore. Well portrayed. It can be repetitive, but so are a pre-schooler problems.

a really helpful book

this book could have been a bit shorter but I think it's a really good book overall. it's based on a few essential principles on how to talk to a child. I instantly started following these principles and I already see how they can improve my relationship with my 5 year old daughter.

Give it a chance

At first I was a little put off by the delivery but after I got used to it, it worked for this title. It will be interesting to see how i put the concepts into play.

loved it!

The tools that are given in this book are helping! It took me a wile to finish it, due to my buissy schedule, but the book itself was well written, easy to connect to the stories and it was fun to listen to.
Thanks, I enjoyed it!

Step 1: acknowledge feelings ...

Wonderful book! I have listened to other books on parenting and this one is one of my favorites. While I was skeptical that no rewards nor punishments would be even a possibility, I was won over by the logic to treat the little kid like I would want to be treated (with boundaries, of course) and stories of how it worked. The concepts sunk in more hearing different stories from different families with each topic on how the ‘tools’ were used. These were narrated by different voices, which was nice. The summary at the end of each chapter was a good refresher and almost always began with: ‘step 1: acknowledge feelings’. I’m even trying it on my spouse. Lol! I’m finding I’m a lot more relaxed, everyone is less stressed and we’re enjoying life a little more. My child is barely talking, so I look forward to listening to this book again down the road and sharpening my tools later.
