Publisher's summary

Twelve tales of astrological anguish! What’s your horoscope read?

A haunted Manor. An energy drink with horrific side effects. Proof it’s possible to be too popular. Horoscopes is a collection of short stories about the darker side of the zodiac. The first short story collection from the macabre mind of P.W Hillard. Dark and twisted, Horoscopes is a look at how fortunes can be more far more sinister than they first appear. Featuring 12 short stories, each representing one of the signs of the zodiac; Horoscopes is a cavalcade of strange creatures, violent spirits and fountains of gore.

Stories include:

  • Aries - Jason and his crew plan a burglary, eager to take advantage of a now empty home after its owner passed. What they experience will teach them that the dead are best left alone.
  • Sagittarius - A young girls dreams hint at something terrible. Scared of her abilities the truth proves something far more shocking and bizarre.
  • Libra - A woman experiences the most horrific thing known to man. A Job interview! Charlie soon learns her habit of judging can come bike to bite you.

An Interesting Collection

This is a collection of short, twisted and dark stories. Each one with a name of a astrological sign. They are different and can be listened in any order. I enjoyed listening to them all, although there were some I enjoyed more than others. The narration was well done. Matt Jenkins does well with the character voices and emotions. He does enhance a few of the voices but I enjoyed it. The only complaint I have is that the non-conversation parts were read a bit slowly and on the mono toned side. Despite this I still enjoyed listening to this collection of stories.

A solid collectiom

This is a solid collection of short horror fiction. I have seen many anthologies use a theme for the collection of short stories, but I think this was the first time I’ve seen a single person author do it.

Overall, the stories were nice, sharp pieces of short fiction, that tickle the mind and shiver the heart. A couple of the stories I felt had a bit of a tenuous connection to their astrological sign, but it didn’t detract from the enjoyability of the stories at all.

For fans of short horror fiction, this may not be the best collection you will read this year, but is well worth giving a spin.

Gives a sinister edge to daily horoscopes

This is a pretty good collection of stories, joined together by tying into a zodiac sign. I like how each tale started with one of those hilariously generic horoscopes and then tied it in to the tale.

Some of the stories had pretty grisly endings, so caution there for anyone a bit squeamish. I didn't find it too bad personally, and felt it sort of helped convey just how raw and brutal some of the situations were.

On the writing, there were some odd sentences here and there, but seldom enough that it was distracting. One that I can remember offhand went something like "His clothes were soaking wet and there were glowing blue dots on his clothes".

Narration was acceptable, but much of the dialogue was read either blandly or in tones that did not match the conversation. I felt it needed to be listened to at 1.25x speed as well. 1x actually sounded like slow motion.

I was provided this audiobook for free and am voluntarily leaving this review. As with most collections, there were a few that I found to be duds, but overall, definitely worth a listen.

You’ll never look at your horoscope the same way again

To most of us a horoscope is a gag we read about online or in the newspaper. Today is your lucky day, you’ll meet a tall dark stranger, beware the color orange. For some it’s a guide to their lives. Here in this collection PW Hillard takes the horoscope to a level more along the lines of how to die. These 12 chilling tales are each proceeded by a simple reading of a horoscope that he twists and turns into a hellish tale of death and destruction for those of that sign. Get ready for a wild set of 12 tales, pay close attention to the horoscope and watch as its twisted into the horrorscope that the collection is named as. Need to be longer!

This was an interesting batch of short stories. I felt like most of the stories really needed to be longer. I know readers/listeners always say that if they liked a short story, but while I’m one of those people, it just didn’t feel like there was enough story to really give a good review/rating.

I noticed there were a lot of stories relating to a character changing into something else. Because of that, I wish the stories would have been a smidgen longer so the reader knew how that came about. As in, one character changes into a scorpion creature but how? Why? I guess I was just left with too many unanswered questions.

I liked the idea from “Libra” in which the “bad” female was forced to judge others for a job. I also liked “Virgo” that had authors being killed by their own creatures/characters. That was a unique idea that I’ve never come across with all my reading. Overall, I think I like all the stories ( I did find the first one kind of boring though and was confused by “Sagittarius” and “Leo.”)

The narrator did a really good job overall. I’m usually not a fan of the special effects a narrator adds into an audiobook. On that note, minus the talking demon effect in one of the first stories, I liked the special effects added in.

Twisted

These stories are twisted in a H.P. Lovecraft way. Dark menacing beings. People messing with the occult and regretting it in horrible ways.
