Publisher's summary

After the crowning of Robert the Bruce, Sir James Douglas is sent to the Scottish borders to wreak havoc on those loyal to Edward of England. But his plans go wildly astray when Lady Ailish Maxwell’s brother is captured by her traitorous uncle. James has every intention of finding the lad but when Her Ladyship announces she’s joining the quest, he’s not about to let her go, no matter how beautiful her crystal eyes, or convincing her silver tongue.

And Ailish will not sit idle while her brother, the true heir to the Maxwell dynasty, is taken deeper into the enemy’s lair. After putting forth every ounce of reasoning she can muster, Sir James agrees to allow her to pose as his wife. But what she doesn’t count on is falling in love with the braw Highlander. And as they ride farther into enemy lands, they cannot ignore the intensity of the passion simmering between them - though it could very well destroy everything they have worked so hard to preserve.

A Great start to new exciting series

This was a great listen. Again Dave Gillies did a wonderful job with narration and brought all the characters to life. Again Amy did wonderful job writing this story I couldn’t put it down. As always she did a great job mixing history and fiction together to create a story you can not put down.

Perfect follow up to the William Wallace series!

Strong and brave FMC, enthralling and badass FMC, set in the Scottish war for independence with admirable historical accuracy.

I loved this story! I read (and listened) to this book directly following Amy Jarecki's William Wallace series and this followed the timeline perfectly.

I didn't realize at first the The Black Douglas was an actual historical knight, but once again Jarecki has done an incredible job of weaving historical fact and fiction to deliver one hell of a compelling and fun story.

Love love love this narrator and will follow him to other author's works once I've exhausted Jarecki's audible offerings.

I love this author

I love this author I have read and listened to all of her books. With that being said the female character in this book was absolutely annoying and a little to far into empty headedness. Now on to the next book!!

Most annoying woman in Scottish history

Love the author but hate who she chose for the Black Douglas. He deserved better than a spoiled girl

Too much reality made this book sad!

Ms. Jarecki is a superb historian and thoroughly researches her titles. I love studying this time period and Dave Gillies is my favorite narrator by far, but he was wasted on this story! It is NOT good to bring too much reality when I am trying to escape to a fictional world of romance and chivalry! I will never read a book about William Wallace for the same reason! I knew about the Black Douglas and the history behind the Bruce's coronation. I wanted a ROMANCE that would last! This book made me sad. One reads romance fiction to escape today's world, not to be drowned in history that is worse than anything we suffer now!! If I wanted reality, I would watch the news. I am done with this author. I hope Dave finds another series like Hannah Howell's or Vonda Sinclair's! I want a HERO and a heroine worthy of escapism. Disappointing, not historically, but for escapism.

Skip it

The heroine, Ailish, is a complete idiot. It's so frustrating when heroines fall short in such a fundamental way. No one is asking for Mensa level, just normal intelligence would be fine.
