About this listen

Peewee idolizes Jake, a big brother whose dreams of auto mechanic glory are fueled by the hard road coming to link their Indiana town and futures with the 20th century. And motoring down the road comes Irene Ridpath, a young librarian with plans to astonish them all and turn Peewee's life upside down.

This novel, with its quirky characters, folksy setting, classic cars, and hilariously larger-than-life moments, is vintage Richard Peck, an offbeat, deliciously wicked comedy that is also unexpectedly moving.

Critic reviews

"As always, Peck writes with humor and affection about times past, elders, and growing up strong." (Kirkus Reviews, starred review)

"Another gem from Peck. "(School Library Journal)

"Peck's one-liners, colorful physical comedy, and country dialect, prominent in most of his recent novels, are great as usual." (Booklist)

So enjoyable

Once again, listening to a story by Richard Peck is pure pleasure. His characters are so real, you just love them. There is something special about the way he can give you a sense of place and time. Indiana in the early 1900s, dirt roads, early autos, old farm houses, townspeople who were quirky and real, all these brought this story to life. If you read this, Richard Peck, please accept my thanks.

Fun and well- written!

Story awesome, listening was hard because of lackluster performance--almost monotone. Peck deserves better interpretation. His writing, with quirky characters and dry wit, begs for a performance with more life.

Amazing story of days gone by

I loved this tale! The author expertly crafted characters and story arcs that kept me wanting to hear more and I was sad when it ended! It was also chock full of interesting scenes about classic automobiles and cultural aspects of the past.
