About this listen

Even the inhabitants of secluded Nethercote looked pityingly upon young Henrietta, the vicar's sister; her plain features seemed to almost guarantee her a solitary future. And yet she had a determined spirit and magnificent hazel eyes. So when her great-aunt Hester left her unexpected wealth, Henrietta set out to conquer London's glittering high society and confound them all.

But the fashionable elite was less than warm in its reception, especially when the newcomer, this bold minx, made clear her intention of winning the heart of one of society's most treasured gems: the irresistible, extravagant, heart-stopping Lord Beau Reckford, a prize wildly beyond her humble origins.

ending should have come sooner

first, I did like the story and the characters, mostly. The main characters I liked. Maddie and some of the supportive characters drove me nuts but I believe that was the purpose?
I had a hard time with the voice, especially the male variety. Mostly though, I like the story and it was entertaining but one of my biggest complaints in books is lack of communication and at what I thought should have been the end until the actual end, it was one big lack of communication. Also, a full year! that drove me nuts.
it was mostly clean. there were a couple of inappropriate parts but it wasn't too detailed nor did it go too far.

This story is quite the journey

This book has twists and turns I didn’t see coming and was overall a good journey. My only complaint is that the narrator makes the men characters sound twice as old as they are. So the man of the main character’s affections sounds 75 instead of the 30 years old he is. It’s a but unsettling at times. But still a good listen.

Narration was just okay

Story had some twists. The love interest character was not fully developed. Her female friend was way over the top, wearing clothes that were almost transparent. That would not have happened.

Bad narration

I dislike the narrator for this book. The characters sound old and shrewish. Even the men sound old. It is not good when the women characters are in their teens and twenties and they sound 80. It.made it hard to get through the book.

Patronizing storytelling is not for me.

Perhaps I don’t understand the humor in this book, or maybe I don’t understand the desired audience. This story comes across as a historical book of mystery and romance meant for a young audience with how foolish and childish the characters are. I don’t know whether it is the author’s story, or the narrator’s telling, but it comes across patronizing. I have taken this book off my phone multiple times and then attempt to give it another chance. This is my third go around and I still have two hours to finish. …I’m not certain I can do it. The story doesn’t flow well and everyone involved is incredibly selfish or dim witted.

Madcap fun

Missed responses. Repressed society, a spinster...a good villian. What more, could you want? More silly, tame Recency drama with an element of comedy.

Hilarious!

Chesney/Beaton is such a terrific writer—oh, but she may be deceased now…not sure. In any event, Henrietta had me cracking up over and over, notwithstanding all the blood ‘n’ guts. Lindy Nettleton’s narration was in no small part responsible; her myriad voices — especially Maddy’s! — stole the show. I highly recommend this book for a change of pace in Regency romances.
