About this listen

Rebecca Soler, narrator of Marissa Meyer's The Lunar Chronicles, returns to narrate this program.

“Narrator Rebecca Soler delivers a take-no-prisoners performance for the third title in The Lunar Chronicles. Her instinctive delivery of Meyer's humor makes the story an addictive listen. Series fans and new listeners will be equally entranced.” —AudioFile Magazine on Cress

Long before she was the terror of Wonderland—the infamous Queen of Hearts—she was just a girl who wanted to fall in love.

Long before she was the terror of Wonderland, she was just a girl who wanted to fall in love. Catherine may be one of the most desired girls in Wonderland, and a favorite of the unmarried King of Hearts, but her interests lie elsewhere. A talented baker, all she wants is to open a shop with her best friend. But according to her mother, such a goal is unthinkable for the young woman who could be the next queen.

Then Cath meets Jest, the handsome and mysterious court joker. For the first time, she feels the pull of true attraction. At the risk of offending the king and infuriating her parents, she and Jest enter into an intense, secret courtship. Cath is determined to define her own destiny and fall in love on her terms. But in a land thriving with magic, madness, and monsters, fate has other plans.

In Heartless, Marissa Meyer's stand-alone novel, the New York Times-bestselling author dazzles us with a prequel to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

Disappointed

I was really enjoying every minute of this book and the way It was written until the very end. I hate it when books don't have a reasonable ending. I just don't think I can recommend this book to anyone.

Heartbreaking

I never cry when I read books...but this book was so heartfelt (no pun intended) that it made me break down in tears. Marissa Meyer portrays the protagonist Catherine's inner world so well that I felt like I was falling in love and my heart was breaking right alongside hers. Richly creative, emotionally compelling, and beautifully read, this book is one I would highly recommend to anyone who enjoys fantasy.

Great Narrator! Unexpected Outcome!

If you could sum up Heartless in three words, what would they be?

Creative. Not the typical love story I was expecting. Loved the Alice in Wonderland references. I never write reviews but I really loved this book and felt it deserved the stars!

Which character – as performed by Rebecca Soler – was your favorite?

Amazing narrator. Very hard to find a great narrator that doesn't annoy the ears. Rebecca Soler did an impressive job alternating voices for characters, and she puts the right amount of emotion and great use of tone throughout the entire book.

Heartless by Marissa Meyer is wonderful!

Heartless by Marissa Meyer is a wonderful retelling. Heartless is not a traditional retelling though. It is more of a prequel that is inspired by Alice in Wonderland.

Someone asked me what villian I thought was the most misunderstood and my answer is the Queen of Hearts. Then they asked me why I thought the Queen of Hearts is misunderstood. Talking to this person, they thought if I wrote a blog post about it to explain, then I could share why I think that.

My answer is…read Heartless and you have my answer right there. I hadn’t read Heartless at the time of this discussion, but I knew it would be out soon. Meyer does a wonderful job giving the Queen of Hearts a backstory. This backstory explains why I think the Queen of Hearts is misunderstood.

Cath loves to bake. She and her best friend Mary Ann want to open up a bakery together. Cath’s parents want to marry her off to the King of Hearts. I really enjoyed getting to know Cath. her character is written so good. She is whimsical and fun but Cath isn’t’ always the smartest tool in the shed. Cath falls in love, but not with the King. She looks at her life as if it is falling apart because her parents are relentless about marrying the King.

I felt really bad for Cath. She has dreams and goals that keep getting crushed. She just wants to live her own life. I think everyone can relate to her. Cath wants to find true love and be incredibly happy. This story brings us back to the time of were woman should be seen and not heard. who doesn’t love a forbidden love story?

The ending of Heartless is heartbreaking. I think it explains the backstory of the Queen of Hearts perfectly. This book explains perfectly why I think the Queen of Hearts is misunderstood. I really liked Heartless and I am excited to add it to my Alice collection.
