Publisher's summary

This quintessential middle-grade biography of Harriet Tubman now features a cover by NAACP Image Award-winner and Caldecott Honor illustrator Kadir Nelson, a foreword written and read by National Book Award-finalist Jason Reynolds, and additional new material.

A selection of the Schomburg Center's Black Liberation Reading List.

Harriet Tubman: Conductor on the Underground Railroad was praised by the New Yorker as “[A]n evocative portrait” and by the Chicago Tribune as “[S]uperb”. It is a gripping and accessible portrait of the heroic woman who guided more than 300 slaves to freedom and who is expected to be the face of the new $20 bill.

Harriet Tubman was born a slave and dreamed of being free. She was willing to risk everything - including her own life - to see that dream come true. After her daring escape, Harriet became a conductor on the secret Underground Railroad, helping others make the dangerous journey to freedom.

This award-winning introduction to the late abolitionist, which was named an ALA Notable Book and a New York Times Outstanding Book, also includes a supplemental PDF with educational back matter such as a timeline, discussion questions, and extension activities.

A real superhero

Marvel and DC characters have nothing on Harriet Tubman. She was a real life superhero.

A revelation

I had long heard of Harriet Tubman, but never read her story. Anyone who wants to learn about the American experience,, should read this beautifully written piece of national and personal History. Beautifully narrated. I often do not finish books and rarely find a page turner. This is one of the better books I have ever read. Harriet Tubman is a National Treasure.

Making Harriet Tubman Personal

Emailed to several Friends,
This is the first time in my adult life I have read (listened) to Harriet Tubmans story. I guess the reasons why i waited so long are several. As well the reasons why to read it now several.
Each chapter evoked a deeper and deeper emotional response in me. My family endured the passage to Connecticut in 1690s but not in irons. They later traveled to Chicago then to Ohio not as run aways but on wagons and trains.
My great great grandfather ran away from his family in Ohio to enlist in the Union army during the war. In fact all my forbears volunteered for some measure of time with the military. My brother now lives on the coastal island that Major Gould’s Massechusit’s regiment camped upon before seeing their first action at Darrien, GA. (Not one they were proud of)

One of many things that impressed me was when Harriet realized some runaways must have succeeded in reaching freedom yet her story did not tell of anyone willing to return to lead others. Or even to tell that it could be done. And that people out there cared. Yet she was compelled to. Again and again. She used talents and skills that were taught in her young life as well skills learned later of necessity and of desire.
I now feel it curious that in some small measure I’ve been able to use some meager talents given to me and skills learned to help rescue only a few from hunger, illness, poverty, worry, and despair, to know they have friends who care, and have their back. And willing to use savings, vacations, and time to enrich their lives as we too have been enriched.
If your life has also changed as a result of someone’s compassion and bravery I would love to hear of it. God Bless.

Excellent narration and enjoyable content.

This book was very informative and extremely easy to listen to. I listen to Audible on my daily walks and some books require more concentration than can be given on a walk/run. This book kept my attention with the stories from Harriett’s life. Not just a bunch of facts.
