About this listen

A brand-new extreme horror novel from the twisted mind that brought you Woom.

Revenge is on the program at this year's Splatterfest convention!

Horror authors, critics, and fans from all over the world have gathered to share stories, enjoy each other's company, and to take part in the yearly Gross Out contest, a fan favorite.

But some attendees have arrived with ulterior motives. Clay Kayden, whose story at the last in-person Gross Out contest got him "canceled", wants to tear down the convention from the inside. Moira Mead is desperate to impress her favorite horror director, who's promised to option a story based on the weekend's readings. And Clay's former mentor, Guest of Honor David Ennis, just wants to find his muse again…no matter the cost.

In a weekend filled with violence and horror, no one will be spared from trauma, and only one author can reign supreme.

Gross Out features characters and situations from the novella Woom. While this not a direct sequel, it does continue Shyla and Angel's story from that fateful night in Room 6 of the Lonely Motel.

WARNING: Do not buy this book if you have a weak stomach, if you're easily disturbed, or if you're looking for a light horror listen. THIS IS NOT THAT BOOK. Seriously. You've been warned.

fun story but nothing memorable

this was a quick listen, enjoyable as a pulp story to listen as you shower. not as gross as some have hinted

This book is a blast

I LOVED THIS BOOK SO MUCH! Gross Out is my favorite book of the year so far and it will be tough to change that. I can always count on Duncan Ralston for an excellent thrill ride. The characters are nuts & there is so much going on. This book is so much fun!

Making Gross Fun

For an extreme horror book, this story was a lot of fun. In a way, it felt like catching up with old friends, and it sort of was when taken into the account that some of Ralston’s characters from another book, Woom, had a role in this story.

I loved the shenanigans that each character got themselves into. This book was almost like listening to someone’s real convention experience. Loved every minute, especially the gross out shorts sprinkled throughout. They were creative and cringy and the perfect amount of gross.

Outstanding!

Just have fun with it

GROSS OUT We all get that Duncan Ralston knows how to pack in when it comes to visual imagery. When the story involves splatterpunk authors trying to outdo each other at a convention then you don’t even want to imagine what goes down.
A great subplot in this book is a visit to the Lonely Motel and a chat with Angel and Shyla from the Woom-averse.
Full of revenge and squabbles between authors, reviewers, and protesters.
Luckily I know this is just a parody, right? Everyone gets along in this community and there is never any controversy.
I listened to the audiobook on this in order to get even more senses involved.

Disgusting!! In the best way

As always Duncan Ralston has mastered the art of making me queasy. The Characters are great, there definitely some scene stealing parts of this book, but overall, A great read!

Gross fun!

I've already read and reviewed the book on its own, so I knew going in that it would be a blast. But the narration really took this one to another level for me. Each character had a unique voice and tone. Even in scenes that were mainly dialogue, I never had any trouble knowing which character was speaking. This is easily the most amusing audiobook I've listened to so far.

It was ok

It wasn't a terrible book but it wasn't good either. It read like "I don't know what to write about so I'll write about a struggling author."

A darkly comic satire of the horror community

Duncan Ralston's Gross Out lives up to its name—certainly. But don't let the cover fool you—the book is also a darkly comic satire of fame, celebrity, cancel culture, Hollywood, the horror community, and anything that gets in the author's way.

Fans of early Carl Hiaasen will recognize the way Ralston approaches characterization. If you have an iron stomach and a predilection toward the more extreme side of horror, you'll absolutely love this novel.
