About this listen
Are you excited about planning your next trip? Do you want to try something new? Would you like some guidance from a local? If you answered yes to any of these questions then this Greater Than a Tourist book is for you.
Greater Than a Tourist: Bari, Puglia Region, Italy by Antonella Cariello offers the inside scoop on the Bari region. Most travel books tell you how to travel like a tourist. Although there is nothing wrong with that, as part of the Greater Than a Tourist series, this book will give you travel tips from someone who has lived at your next travel destination.
You will discover advice that will help you throughout your stay. This book will not tell you exact addresses or store hours but instead will give you excitement and knowledge from a local that you may not find in other travel books.
Travel like a local. Slow down, stay in one place, and get to know the people and the culture. By the time you finish this book, you will be eager and prepared to travel to your next destination.

Story
Pulitzer Prize, Biography, 2016. Barbarian Days is William Finnegan's memoir of an obsession, a complex enchantment. Surfing only looks like a sport. To initiates it is something else entirely: a beautiful addiction, a demanding course of study, a morally dangerous pastime, a way of life.

Story
The real stories behind the scenery of America’s national parks. For 12 years, Andrea Lankford lived in the biggest, most impressive national parks in the world, working a job she loved. She chaperoned baby sea turtles on their journey to sea. She pursued bad guys on her galloping patrol horse. She jumped into rescue helicopters bound for the heart of the Grand Canyon. She won arguments with bears. She slept with a few too many rattlesnakes. Hell yeah, it was the best job in the world! Fortunately, Andrea survived it.

When she was suddenly given the opportunity of a new life in rural Jutland, journalist and archetypal Londoner Helen Russell discovered a startling statistic: the happiest place on earth isn't Disneyland but Denmark, a land often thought of by foreigners as consisting entirely of long, dark winters, cured herring, Lego and pastries. What is the secret to their success? Are happy Danes born or made?

Story
The “mountain men” were the hunters and trappers who fiercely strode the Rocky Mountains in the early to mid-1800s. They braved the elements in search of the skins of beavers and other wild animals, to sell or barter for goods. The lifestyle of the mountain men could be harsh, existing as they did among animals, and spending most of their days and nights living and camping out in the great unexplored wilds of the Rockies.

In August 2008, when eleven climbers lost their lives on K2, the world’s most dangerous peak, two Sherpas survived. They had emerged from poverty and political turmoil to become two of the most skillful mountaineers on earth. Based on unprecedented access and interviews, Buried in the Sky reveals their astonishing story for the first time.

Concise & Helpful
Lots of suggestions from a local — short but sweet! Made me more inclined to use Bari as a home base — good public transportation hub. Includes a few other locales of interest outside the city. Only negative— the narrator’s voice was annoying— would rather hear the author or an Italian accent!

fairly vacuous & poorly presented
This audiobook is just shy of useless. It rings as if it were written in the 1970s, with vague advice like the 1st tip it offers: "think of your trip to Puglia as an adventure." The remaining tips focus mainly on cathedrals (really? this is a local's advice?). No restaurants, no lodging, no hidden gems. A large public park? If I want to visit a public park, won't I find that on my own? Advice like 'Bari is by the sea, so sit by the sea and have a beer' points to no research whatsoever bearing upon this work. Meanwhile, the narrator repeatedly mis-pronounces Bari and other Italian names throughout his reading.
This is not how we seek information in the new millennium, nor is this the quality of information we seek. I can watch YouTube videos of people like me touring around Bari in hi-def, showing and telling about specific and out-of-the-way places for hours. I don't need this overstated (chapter 1 painstakingly glorifies the book series and its creator) Cliff's-notes of a recording, teaching me to be exactly a tourist.
