 Als der ehemalige Anwalt Jan de Fries mit seinen Freunden Uz und Onno zum Krabbenfischen auf die Nordsee hinausfährt, ahnt er nicht, dass er nur wenige Stunden später in die leeren Augenhöhlen einer toten Frau starren wird. Für die zuständigen Kriminalbeamten Hahn und Mackensen steht von Anfang an fest, dass die Tote bei einem Segelunfall ums Leben gekommen ist. Jan und die Schwester der Toten, Eva Ehrlich, hingegen sind überzeugt davon, dass es sich um Mord handelt.

Evas Bitte, die Todesumstände ihrer Schwester zu untersuchen, lehnt Jan zunächst ab. Aber Evas blaue Augen und das Auftauchen einer zweiten Wasserleiche im Hafen von Norddeich, bewegen ihn doch dazu, der Bitte der Verzweifelten nachzukommen. Zumal der zweite, unbekannte Tote nicht in der Nordsee ertrunken, sondern auf besonders diabolische und heimtückische Art umgebracht wurde.
