About this listen

Is faith in Jesus enough for salvation? Perhaps, says Matthew Bates, but we're missing pieces of the gospel. The biblical gospel can never change. Yet our understanding of the gospel must change. The church needs an allegiance shift.

Popular pastoral resources on the gospel are causing widespread confusion. Bates shows that the biblical gospel is different, fuller, and more beautiful than we have been led to believe. He explains that saving faith doesn't come through trust in Jesus' death on the cross alone but through allegiance to Christ the king. There is only one true gospel and one required response: allegiance.

Bates ignited conversation with his successful and influential book Salvation by Allegiance Alone. Here, he goes deeper while making his acclaimed teaching on salvation more accessible and experiential for believers who want to better understand and share the gospel. Gospel Allegiance includes a guide for further conversation, making it ideal for church groups, pastors, leaders, and students.

This book explained so many things that I saw in the Bible that didn’t line up with what I have grown up hearing in evangelical Christianity.

Excellent

This book weaved seamlessly between “well obviously” statements and some significant points in an attempt to separate the true Gospel from the overlapping benefits and consequences of the Gospel. The author’s goal was Gospel “precision” and he uses the most well-known teachers and preachers as case studies to make his point.

The author was versed in biblical language, nuanced in his approach, and balanced in his reasoning.

I am processing, and may have to listen again or get a hard copy to wrestle with the ideas some more. I feel that some of his points were overstated, even if true.
He draws quite a bit from the New Perspective.

Most significantly, he makes the case that “faith” or “pistis” is most properly translated “allegiance” or “faithfulness”. The ramifications for the traditional protestant hermeneutic of justification by faith are important to note.

Challenging and Well-Written

Matthew Bates provides a solid framework for holding faith and works together in the christian walk along with a better understanding of what the Gospel is.

*** Just re-listened to the entire book. Allegiance to the King, Jesus Christ, is so impelling I am ordering a hard copy to study.

Faith or Works

Bates makes a compelling case from the Scriptures for “faith” being better understood as allegiance and how that impacts our understanding of the gospel of the kingdom itself.

A much needed corrective in evangelism!

The reader was perfect in his presentation of the material. Loved the challenge of the material as it makes you think of your own view of salvation and the gospel.

The new view of the Gospel

It addresses the scholarship issues without becoming overly technical. It addresses popular critiques and highlights where other popular works on the gospel miss the mark. It presents clearly the compelling case for the King Jesus Gospel.

Sound scholarship - Humble presentation

I will start by saying I did not agree with a lot of the book's content. With that being said it is very thorough... More so even than his last book. It was a very honest and genuine take from a great theologian. We did not arrive to the same conclusions, but the book is great. He does an amazing job of laying out his point of view. I am a firm believer that you don't have to agree with an author to read and consider their material. I recommend reading this book and even if you disagree with him I guarantee you will learn something and walk away with more knowledge and understanding on this vital topic than you'd know.

Same Path. Different Destination

Dr. Bates provides an excellent and in-depth look at why we need to better understand the Good News that Jesus and his disciples are so intent on telling everyone about. Jesus is King and we need to give our allegiance to him!
