About this listen

The paper was an unexpected inheritance from a close colleague, and Lois must keep it for at least a year, bringing a host of challenges, lessons, and blessings into her life. When Lois pulls into Green on New Year's Day, she expects a charming little town full of smiling people. She quickly realizes her mistake. After settling into a loaned house out on Route 2, she finds herself battling town prejudices and inner doubts and making friends with the most surprising people: troubled teenager Katy, good-looking catfish farmer Chris, wise and feisty Aunt Helen, and a female African American physician named Kevin.

Whether fighting a greedy, deceitful politician or rescuing a dog she fears, Lois notices the headlines in her life have definitely improved. She learns how to provide small-town news in a big-hearted way and realizes that life is full of newsworthy moments. When she encounters racial prejudice and financial corruption, Lois also discovers more about the goodness of real people and the importance of being part of a community. While secretly preparing the paper for a sale, Lois begins to realize that God might indeed have a plan for her life and that perhaps the allure of city life and career ambition are not what she wants after all.

It started out kind of slow. I wasn't sure I would finish it it. By chapter 4 I finally got into it. Great story after that.

This story unfolded slowly but brilliantly. Without realizing it, I was drawn into the lives of the characters and the intrigues of the town. A great read which delivers a powerful message without being preachy. The themes resonated with me on several levels and I gained new insight and appreciation for southern hospitality. Hope and inspiration delivered at the pace one associates with hot summer days in the south.

Well, I'll be . . . this one is the best I've listened to for a good while! I've had it in my library for a long time and never got around to listening to it and now I don't know what I was waiting for! It didn't take me long to realize I was missing out . . . when Lois pulls in to Green, Louisiana, she knew for certain she was out of her comfort zone . . . lol . . . dogs running wild, corrupt politicians, the best food on the planet, and everyone calling you honey or sweetie . . . and did I mention, everybody goes to church on Sundays? When a flat tire necessitates a chance meeting with the local lady pastor, who changes her tire for her . . . a friendship forms that eventually leads Lois back to the Lord . . . good looking neighbor, Chris , who raises catfish and walks his dog, and all her employees at the little newspaper that Lois inherited from her friend, Ed, they all have grown to love Lois . . . and she loves them . . . and the little town of Green has changed and grown in the year since Lois arrived . . . the paper is finally making money . . . she's learned a lot . . . but will the lure of the big city be too much for her to turn down???
