About this listen

The long-awaited fifth installment in Garth Nix's New York Times best-selling Old Kingdom series, for listeners who enjoy series by Rae Carson, Kristin Cashore, Scott Westerfeld, and Cassandra Clare.

Goldenhand takes place six months after the events of Abhorsen and follows the novella Nicholas Sayre and the Creature in the Case, which is featured in Across the Wall.

Lirael lost one of her hands in the binding of Orannis, but now she has a new hand, one of gilded steel and Charter Magic. On a dangerous journey, Lirael returns to her childhood home, the Clayr's Glacier, where she was once a Second Assistant Librarian. There a young woman from the distant North brings her a message from her long-dead mother, Arielle. It is a warning about the Witch with No Face. But who is the Witch, and what is she planning? Lirael must use her new powers to save the Old Kingdom from this great danger - and it must be forestalled not only in the living world but also in the cold, remorseless river of Death.

Good... But not as good as the original trilogy

I enjoyed this book, but it wasn't as well written as the first 3. It lacked the rich imagery and character development that I am used to with Garth Nix. It reads more like YA romance.

Still, the world and characters are recognizable as the ones I loved, and the story is interesting... just a little flat.

Excellent story, disappointing narration

Garth Nix writes wonderful stories. This one does not disappoint

I don't care much for the narrator. She has a stilted healing voice, and doesn't differentiate between characters very well. Her voice for Ferrin was frustrating to listen to.

Perhaps we could convince Simon Vance to do this book?

Perfect

Every book in the Old Kingdom is perfect! I smile, cry, laugh, and hold my breath. Garth Nix is a superb storyteller! Start at the beginning and do not miss a word, you will not be disappointed.

Stunning and gorgeous

This is absolutely one of the most satisfying books of the series. I'm honestly speechless.

Wonderful ending

This epic ending to a great series will fill your home with joy. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves sabriel or any of the previous books. However, the narrator doesn’t do nearly as good of a job as Tim curry did.

A great final chapter

This was a fantastic final (?) chapter to the Old Kingdom series. I wish Tim Curry could hav dread it. The narration was monotonous and made it hard to listen to, but I love the stories and so I soldiered through. Would love to hear it recorded by the reader of Clariel or some other performer.

Lacks the wonder of the previous titles

a bit less fantastical, but I still enjoyed it. It felt rushed, and the resolution felt dull in comparison to Sabriel and Abhorsen. The book seemed to be more a title to wrap up the loose ends of Abhorsen.

A wonderful series continues!

I still miss Tim Curry's talents, but the current narrator grows on you. The story is quite fun, and much more upbeat than the previous, very dark "Clariel". I hope there will be more.

So good I didn’t want it to end

Once again I’m very sad that I’ve finished another Garth Nix book. Loved all the characters, new and old, and the plot was great.

A great addition to the Abhorsen world

The only way this could have been better is if they'd brought Tim Curry back to do the voice acting. Heather Wilds does a good job, but she's no Tim Curry so if you were in love with his depiction of Mopit you will be a bit disappointed. Still well worth the listen.
