About this listen

Kate Ballantyne's life was cruising along very nicely. No highs. No lows. Just the way she liked it. She had a good job and a casual relationship. Then Patsy Maclean had a 60th birthday and Kate learned her entire family would be attending the party, including her younger daughter, Ashley.

As an orphaned 10-year-old, Kate's young life had been turned upside down when she was sent to live with her aunt in the historic gold mining city of Charters Towers. For the quiet and lonely Kate, the extroverted Ashley Maclean had been her salvation. They were inseparable and their childhood friendship developed into love, a love Kate had thought would last forever. But Ashley had succumbed to family pressures and broken Kate's vulnerable heart.

It had taken Kate years to even begin to get over that betrayal and now, 10 years later, that same Ashley Maclean was coming home. Kate told herself she was well over her, that Ashley had ceased to be a part of her life, that she'd moved on and made a life without her. She kept telling herself that. Yet her reaction to just the mention of Ashley's name had her wondering if her hard-won indifference was a battle she only thought she'd won.

A delicious, beautifully narrated classic!

A question was posed in a sapphic readers Facebook group about which books we wished were on audio, but weren't. I answered that I would really love to see more classic literature lesfic produced. The goddesses must have been listening because to my utter delight, Aussie author Lyn Denison decided to self-publish her books on audio. And not just her current work, but the wonderful books that have been sitting on my bookshelves for the last two decades.

And if that wasn't exciting enough, she's brought us a new fabulous Aussie narrator in Jenny Walters, whose voice has me swooning for days! Imagine a delicious tone like that of Anastasia Watley, but with an Australian accent. It's like I'd died and gone to heaven listening to the actress narrate Gold Fever, an old favorite second chance romance. It felt like visiting an old friend, but at the same time experiencing it in a whole new and exciting way.

Denison's books mean a lot to me for many reasons. Decades ago when I started reading lesbian literature, the only way to find these books was to seek out independent gay and lesbian bookstores and they were few and far between in the U.S. I would often travel and look for them specifically so I could load up on books until my next trip.

Back then there weren't FB groups to discuss books with or forums like Goodreads to see if something would appeal. You had to read the blurbs in the bookstores and hope it would be something you'd like once you got it home. And because there wasn't the availability there is now, these books felt so precious to find and to own. Lyn Denison's books were some that I actively sought out and would re-read often until I could take another trip to stock up again.

I'm so excited Denison is writing and releasing new books after being away for a while. She said she wanted to put her books on audio to make them accessible to folks who wouldn't be able to enjoy them otherwise. Thankfully Walters has narrated several others, as has another Aussie favorite Cat Gould.

I couldn't be more thrilled! Give them a chance - no doubt you'll love them too.
