The story:

Loved the first two books, and most of this one. The last 30-ish minutes of this last one was underwhelming. Felt like a forced set up.

Great story from beginning to end! Interesting twists during the story. Great performance that matched the book!

The narrator is excellent and really helped bring this story to life. A challenge given the number of POV characters (it’s a lot.) I’ve only gotten interested in the 40k universe in the last year or so and have never been able to play the tabletop game.

However, as a lifelong sci-fi fan I’m happy that there is so much more to 40k. This series andThe Vaults of Terra books are great even if you’re not steeped in the 40k universe. It certainly helps to know about the background and history of factions but these can be understood and enjoyed even if you don’t.

The story and perspectives from which the story unfolds are very engaging. The discovery of what lies beyond the halo scar was particularly interesting as you get to see a univers beyond the imperium of man and travel in space beyond the light of the astronomican. The characters on this voyage are also very interesting and well developed. What I found most interesting is that at the end of the trilogy you are left wondering if the intentions of the villain of the story were not so bad for the imperium and it's development out of the stagnation it is currently in.

While the ending definitely could have been a bit better, what a journey it was! The trip through the Halo Scar and beyond was amazing and has given me a great deal of ideas for 40k and Killteam scenarios.
