About this listen

From the New York Times bestselling and Edgar Award-winning author Adrian McKinty comes the origin story of his most famous creation, Detective Sean Duffy.

Belfast, 1980, is the apocalypse. Bombings, riots, army on the streets, low flying helicopters, and ever-present rain. The grinding Northern Irish civil war between Protestants and Catholics has been going for a decade now. Hated by both sides are the police.

Sean Duffy Year 1 takes us into that world. Newly promoted Detective Sergeant Sean Duffy is given his first command at Carrickfergus CID.

In this prequel novella, McKinty takes listeners through Duffy’s first two weeks on the job. A case to solve and a chance to impress his bosses, if, of course, he can get out of it alive.

Funny and sad as hell.

Perfection. Laughed loudly 2 or 3 different times. This touches on everything that makes this series great.

A fun little backstory

A fun, low stakes novella about Sean’s first week on the job at Carrickfergus CID. It will be a great way to introduce people to the series, as In the Cold Cold Ground can be intense.

I’m a little disgusted with the “cash grab” comment in another review. Authors don’t set prices. If you want to complain about the publisher or the platform, knock yourself out. There are plenty of places to do that. Writing is a job. Doing your job is how you feed yourself and your family. It is not a “cash grab.”

Short but nails the character from the start.

Well performed, no wasted effort in the writing. Always good stuff from McKinty. Would have appreciated more fire the $.

It’s not even a book!

Only an hour long. This isn’t even a short story. Nothing happens. There no plot!

Fairly low effort for what you're paying

I love the character and I love Gerard Doyle's narration, but this seems like a cynical cash grab given the price and length. It spends a lot of time revisiting plot points that have already been established in the full-length books. You don't get any new understanding about Sean Duffy's character. If you have an extra credit and love the series, go for it, but otherwise maybe wait for the price to come down to a couple of bucks before you take the plunge.
