Publisher's summary

A monster lurks inside me. Controlling the wild beast is impossible.

I lacked the ability to harness magic naturally. So the Morrigan showed me how to steal pure and black magic through blood rituals. Now that I’m filled with deadly magic, I struggle to deal with the darkness.

My powers also make me a prime target for jealous gods and the stupid magic councils.

But when an enchanted relic that has haunted me for most of my life goes missing in my old stomping grounds, I shove fear aside and return to the city where everyone wants me dead.

To find Lugh’s Spear, I’ll need to team up with former enemies and figure out which one of my allies is lying to me. The bounty huntress from the Supreme Magic Council is hot on my heels, too.

With several powerful enemies closing in on me, I could leave town and take the easy way out. I never take the easy way out. I plan to find Lugh’s Spear and return it to the Celtic gods.

One big problem. My black-magic blood can turn me into a violent maniac at the drop of a hat. If I can control my inner darkness, I might be able to solve the mystery.

Ginger Storm is a pause-resisting urban fantasy adventure featuring a take-charge heroine who chases bad guys instead of boyfriends.

Mythological and Magical

This was a really great start to a new urban fantasy series! It’s full of action, mythology, magic, and betrayal. I loved the mixture of Greek and Celtic mythology along with many mythical beings. There was honestly a lot going on between finding Lugh’s Spear, a wolf-vampire war, and the mix of so many gods, goddesses, and mythical/ magical beings that it kept you wanting more. The heroine was smart and sassy and I enjoyed her movie references that no one else understood and her journey throughout the book.
I’ve never listened to a narration by Liz before, but she did a really good job with Ginger Storm. She gave a lot of personality to each character and kept me very entertained that I couldn’t put it down.

An Endless Parade of Supernatural Characters

This book was a blast. Our main character, Junipher, is tough and powerful, and doesn't put up with any shenanigans from others. It seems like each chapter, we meet another new person who is part of the supernatural underground, (often a famous god or goddess,) and we get to know our heroine's relationship to them. Of course there's a quest to find a missing magical object, magical hunters pursuing Junipher, and deceit and betrayal as June has to decide who (and who not) to trust. The action never stops, and Junipher constantly finds herself in battle after battle.

The narration is wonderful. Although she does use accents when a character is foreign, she doesn't go overboard with imitating male and female voices, she just reads with inflection and attitude. Since the book is told through the first person, it really feels like she is speaking in Junipher's voice, with all the snark and sarcasm that the character possesses.

Although this story arc is complete, there are plenty more adventures and unresolved issues that make the reader look forward to the next book in the series. I can't wait to find out what happens next!

a little all over the place but a lot of potential

i was given a copy for free to review.

first id like to say that the reader is quite good, she speaks clearly and differentiates characters well.

As for the contents of the story, i like and understand the motivations of all the characters, the author has a nice way of writing their dialog that feels natural. The story starts with our MC pretty bad off, as it goes on we learn that shes been through a lot and has done some bad things but has decided to turn over a new leaf and the main driver of the story is some of those bad things catching up with her and tempting her to give in to her darker nature.

my main criticism is that the book felt a bit scattered, we're introduced to half a dozen groups who all hate the MC, told about a bunch of things that happened in the past and its just a lot to take in all at once.

I'm looking forward to book 2...

After having just finished off reviewing the disapointing book "Dragon Horn" in the Bloodline Awakened series, I had no small amount of trepidation about starting another story by JP Rice, but I was hopeful too, since we had a new protagonist and a WAY different narrator.
I found myself really enjoying this book! Surprisingly, it's a spin-off from Bloodline Awakened series, this time told from a very different type of protagonist's view point! That protagonist is Juniper, and I absolutely loved her... the book takes place in Pittsburgh so it's unsurprising that she crosses paths with Mike Merlino (the protagonist from Dragon Horn), and I enjoyed her "difficult" exchanges with him. All culminating in their final uneasy truce, because they really are on the same side. Maybe on the same side for different reasons, but both wanting to do what's right!
Liz Brand was a pretty good choice for narrator too, although she didn't quit hit the mark on one or two of the character's voices in the book.
I find myself actually looking forward to the next book. It ought to be fun!

Yay! a really good UB book!

This book is like a delicious goulash of all mythology and folklore. We got Zues, we got Thor, we got Irish deities. They are all here! The characters are really fun and entertaining. (owen!) The story is very well put together and kept my attention. I liked Juniper, she is definitely nor perfect and she has her flaws but she's working on it.
Liz Brand did a perfect job narrating. The quality was great, no problems here.

**This is my honest thoughts on the book. However, i did receive a free copy of the audio book. Thank you Mr. Rice. **

Liz Brand is a refreshing change to narration.

In Ginger Storm J.P. Rice introduces us to Junipher a new character and story arc taking place in the Bloodline Awakened World. Junipher is an interesting character that sometimes you are not sure whether to cheer her on or not. She has not always been a good person in the past but events in the book start making her question her past actions and try to be a better person. Sometimes it seems that everything strives to prevent her from changing for the better.

I found Liz Brand's narration of the story to be a refreshing change as it was just like listening to someone with a pleasant voice read aloud without all the dramatization that is in a lot of audibles. I do quite a bit of listening in the evening when I am trying to unwind and prepare for sleep. Liz gives a good reading that helps with that. I listened to a book awhile back that the narrator put way too much dramatic voice raising in it, so much in fact it got on my nerves and I couldn't continue listening to the book. Liz does not do that.

I enjoyed becoming acquainted with Junipher and the new characters she brings with her in this book. I look forward to hearing her further adventures and learning more about what events molded June into the person she has become as well as watching her character further evolve.

Enchanting!

I really like the main character. She's fierce, smart and calculating. That's rare to find, so many stories with female leads make the stupidest decisions mostly for love. Not this one. She jumps from one adventure to the next, never a dull moment and she's always thinking.
The author seamlessly like a second skin wove in supernatural elements. All the creatures, shfters, dragons, gods, vampires all feel real. Nothing is forced. The entire story flows well with adventure lurking on every page. It's the type of book that's hard to put down, capturing the readers interest start to finish.
I definitely reccomend this book to anyone who enjoys action, adventure and supernatural!

Good story

Interesting story with a complicated main character who is not perfect, but is trying to be better. I really like how it combines gods and goddesses and supernatural beings all into one story.
