Acerca de esta escucha

The dead do not rest till they get what they want. You have arrived in the hills. In here, you are surrounded by dense, menacing forests, enveloped in a deadly silence... You never know what lurks here in the cold, dark night. Do not walk alone after sunset in the hills. A beautiful woman in white haunts the Lonely pathways, looking to enchant and ensnare men... All the people who died in accidents here... They say you hear their screams at night. And the deserted lodges sitting amidst lush greenery and calm streams... Spirits lie in wait here, ready to prey on the living. There are sceptics who did not heed these warnings. They tried to rationalize what they saw, what they felt. But when they came face to face with the beings that they believed didn’t exist, they couldn’t run away anymore... Ghosts of the Silent Hills is a collection that will make your nights a little scarier, encompassing the very best spine-chilling stories based on true hauntings.

Loved the narrator!!

Most of the stories were good but A Little Girl’s Mission was a solid horror story. I could see it being expanded into a movie.

I enjoyed these stories. It’s a collection if “true” ghost stories, many of which seem to have been passed down in the author’s family. A lot of them date from the early days of India’s independence, when there was not a lot of infrastructure, reliable phone service or electricity, especially in rural areas. Being stuck in the middle of nowhere because your bus has broken down, or being unable to drive a sick person to the hospital because the road is blocked, were common occurrences. The sense of isolation is palpable.

The theme of the “virgin ghost” (a young woman who has died unmarried and is searching for a husband among the living) is present in several of the stories. I’d encountered this theme in East Asian stories and horror movies, but didn’t realize it was common in India too. Ghosts that take revenge for violent deaths (especially traffic accidents that recur at the same spot) are another theme. In general, the ghosts are much more malevolent than in Western stories.

Since these are “as told to” stories, family history, or urban legends, rather than literary stories written for publication, the endings sometimes seem abrupt or anticlimactic.

The narrator does a good job of making the stories come to life; she gives the impression of a grandmother relating family history to the younger generation. Her accent sounded authentic, and if she mispronounced a word here and there (like “chasm” with a hard “ch”), it only added to the flavor of the narration.

“True” ghost stories from India

The stories come alive like a film to the mind’s eye. Riya does full justice to the narration - emotions, voice modulation for the different characters so much so that we can build the character/features of the people.

Definitely worth a read and listening to the audio version.

Riveting stories and fantastic narration

It was more voice acting than narrating. I gave it a try, but couldn't get back the two hour mark.
