About this listen

In this inspirational collection of 12 sermons, George MacDonald offers compelling insight into the life of Jesus Christ.

MacDonald stressed the necessity of salvation and the importance of combining Christian faith with obedience to Jesus' teachings. He also believed that God's universal grace would eventually save everyone. Though written in the mid-19th century, these sermons, including "Mirrors of Christ", "Glorified through Trouble", "Salvation from Sin", and "The Giver of Rest", continue to provide contemporary followers with the spiritual guidance they seek.

For those who wish to know Jesus better, this is a book you will want to hear.

none more profound

Profound thoughts from a true spiritual master. MacDonald is solely responsible for my Christianity. Lloyd James' narration is excellent.

Doctrine:

Some of it was questionable, but those last two chapters were absolute gold! A must read for those alone!

A must listen for people from all persuasions

First of all, this narration of Mcdonald's sermons is fantastic. McD'd works are hard to read because of his sentence structures but this audible delivery makes it very simple to follow .
My spirit resonates with the spirit of George McDonald. I've heard lots of teaching and sermons over the last 40 years and few people seem to be on the same page with McDonald. Reading about his life story. it seems like he did not do well in organized religions. it seems that he had a real sensitivity to staying in obedience to the teachings, manhood, and Sonship of the Lord Jesus. He saw the Christian walk as being a very personal relationship with brother Jesus and our heavenly Father. Our loving heavenly Father cares too much for us to let us wander off into harmful and foolish habits. He uses his refining fire to purify us from such stupidity. Our purpose here on Earth is to become like him by following the example of the life of Jesus. We honor God by aiming to behave like his original intent before the fall. And by asking for the holy Spirit's help, we can begin to experience this reality, though imperfectly.
These are the things I have pulled from listening to McDonals sermons dozens of times over.

Why do we call him

...but don't do what he says?

I got this audio book with some reservation, fearing that it would be more of the conservative, yet insubstantial, rhetoric that fills Christian book stores. Not so. George Macdonald's message is simple, "Hear Jesus. Do what he says." And yet he says it convincingly and persuasively. This book should appeal to conservative and liberal Christians alike, because it doesn't spend time being dogmatic or undercutting dogma. Macdonald points us straight to Jesus.

The narrator is also excellent. You can tell he really spent time with these sermons, getting to know their inner workings. His reading brings out the emotion behind every word as if they were his own, without going overboard on drama.

Immensely practical and superbly written.

This was my first exposure to George MacDonald and it certainly won't be my last. Many theology books can be a drag, not because they are poor in content (though some certainly are), but rather because it is difficult to write on theology and philosophy in a manner that is gripping. MacDonald accomplishes both here, and every page was as savory as the last.

Exceptional!

Best book of sermons I've encountered by anyone not named in the BIble. I anxiously await the audio version of his 2nd and 3rd book of sermons.

Good sermons

Overall I felt the sermons were good. I gained a few insights. I felt the last sermon was one of the best. I would have wished for more emphasis on God's grace. There's much talk about obedience. I believe obedience is good, but it comes from a transformed heart. A heart that wants to obey out of love. I wished there was more talk about how we are transformed by grace.

Wonderful description of Jesus and His truths.

These sermons teach how to know and obey Jesus. They reveal the ways of mankind how we fool ourself into to thinking small of God and large of ourselves. They show the terror and beauty of God's plan in sending His Son to make payment for the guilt of the worlds sins so He can bring us into union with Himself for eternity.
