Publisher's summary

Whether we've experienced small setbacks or major traumas, we are all influenced by memories and experiences we may not remember or don't fully understand. Getting Past Your Past offers practical procedures that demystify the human condition and empower listeners looking to achieve real change.

Francine Shapiro, the creator of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), explains how our personalities develop and why we become trapped into feeling, believing, and acting in ways that don't serve us. Through detailed examples and exercises, listeners will learn to understand themselves, and why the people in their lives act the way they do. Most importantly, listeners will also learn techniques to improve their relationships, break through emotional barriers, overcome limitations, and excel in ways taught to Olympic athletes, successful executives, and performers.

An easy conversational style, humor, and fascinating real life stories make it simple to understand the brain science behind why we get stuck in various ways and what we can about it.

Sorry but can't finish the audio version

This book is incredible but Karen White, G-d bless her, sounds like a monotonous robot so unfortunately my brain just can't grasp the material. I wish she would sound more human and more invested in the material. Sometimes too perfect is too much.

referral from a therapist

I first heard about this book from my son's therapist, he's 8, I also have a 9 year old and a 16 year old, we all have been diagnosed with PTSD from an abusive relationship with their father, I had heard about EMDR but I didn't know exactly how it would help but I knew that it was something I needed to look for to help my children and I get through this, the book reassured me that I'm on the right path to getting my children the help they need. I cannot wait to get this process started and to feel better.

Well written intro to EMDR

Francine Shapiro, PhD has written a good book to describe how EMDR works to assist a person's brain to process traumatic incidents, and when a person should seek out professional help. This is a really helpful, interesting book, and I highly recommend it.

Life changer!!!!!

I came here looking to get answers on how to get over a break up, and I've got so much more!!! This book has changed my life in so many ways. I don't understand the people that complain about the writer not giving the techniques, she does, and if that is not enough google EMRD. I have healed so many childhood traumas through EMDR that I thought I would never heal, I have tried all kinds of therapies before coming across this book, none of them worked!!! Regular therapy talking for hours and hours throughout the years about all of my childhood traumas it helped a little bit but this book!! God!!! this is what I have been looking my whole life, everybody should know about EMDR!!!
I am so thankful I broke up with my ex otherwise I would have never found this precious book. Everything happens for a reason

I am studying to become certified EMDR therapist. I learned so much about myself! Awesome book and I have shared it with others. I am looking for a therapist to do my own work as well.
