Classic Character driven Sci-Fi

More in the musing style of Heinlein than the action / event driven modern vogue, Nathan Lowell's Solar Clipper series starts slow and lets you get to know the characters and setting naturally. Wonderfully engaging, one of the few series I revisit every few years.

reveling in the mundane tasks of life

I enjoy this book most because the main character loves coffee and food and find satisfaction in the mundane tasks of life. this book reminds me of past work experiences and eases the monotony of my housework as I listen to it.

Mis-aged Main Character

I overall liked the story line and characters but the depth of knowledge, maturity and thought processes of the main character Ishmael who is 18 years old is more like that of a 50 year old who has had a lot more real world life experiences.

I’ve had a hard time getting past this thought as I’ve listened to the dialogue and conversations he is having.

I keep thinking the main character is way older.

Feel good series

Adventure, not much danger but a story about a young man finding himself through work and building himself a life. Small if any drama. Some romance.
Not for people who want there daring do and fighting, or great drama. This story has a lot of feel good things happening.
I particularly enjoy the decision making and building himself up. I like how everyone seems to want to help everyone else out, with a few rare exceptions. I like how he tries hard and gets rewarded for it.
Others I know wouldn't enjoy this book because of the lack of down and dirty hard luck, bad times and heart wrenching realism making you reevaluate life. I like it because of that lack. Makes me feel happy. Easy listening.

Ishmael Wang heads to a new chapter in his life.

"Call me Ishmael" is kind of the running joke of this series, which centers on crewman Ishmael Wang of the interstellar trading ship Lois McKendrick. This book is a transition book, as Ish goes through a huge life altering change at the end of the book, moving on to the next phase of his adult life. As with the other books, this is a very charactercentric book, since there are no battles, no aliens, just the characters.doing their duties on a trading ship. There is an emergency onboard that could have caused disaster, but the excellent response by the crew saves the ship from disaster. The characters are what make this series, and they are excelletly drawn out, with snappy dialogue, real human emotion, and a story that draws you in. As always, Jeffrey Kafer's narration is top notch, really bringing the characters to life with his warmth and snark! Any fan of sci fi should enjoy these continuing stories of Ishmael Wang.
