About this listen

In the city of Magic's Bend, I protect what's mine. To the world, I'm a feeble Conjurer. To my closest friends, I'm a dangerous Magica with unexplainable powers given to me by a dragon. The downside? If anyone discovers what I am, I'm dead. So I lay low - kicking ass with my weapons, not my magic.

Things go to hell when I witness the murder of a powerful vampire ally and become the key suspect. Soon, I'm hunted by the sexiest, strongest supernatural I've ever met. Ares is an unheard of vampire hybrid, and it's hard to say if he wants to screw me or screw me over.

I've got three days to catch the real killer. The bad news? It will take my forbidden magic to succeed. But can I control it, much less keep my secret with Ares watching my every move?

I'm used to protecting others...now I have to protect myself.

Linsey Hall puts "fantastic" into "fantasy" with her new series!

Despite the already vast and ever-expanding realm of fantasy novels, readers continue to be presented with a relatively limited selection of magical practitioners and practices. Regardless of the series, one typically finds little variation among the usual cast of regulars.

"And now for something completely different..." From the very beginning, Linsey puts her own unique stamp on this series. There is a mix of traditional magical beings as well as new creations of hers. She also gives characters new types of abilities, each with their own limitations.

Linsey uses a deft touch in sprinkling the story with a variety of very funny puns, historical remarks, and jokes that seem particularly aimed at roughly the Generation X–vintage readers. I can't begin to count the times I found myself letting.

Interesting ...

I love the story and the different takes on it. However, it took me a very long time to get into it because I am picky about narrators. This particular narrator, tends to sound like she is talking with a growl at the end of everything she says. It drives me crazy so I can only listen for so long without having to skip back and listen again to get what I missed. I wish this weren't so.

magical excitement

This book started out sounding like a child's book but as it got into the story it got better. It's done in the first person so that could have been part of that. The heroine, Nix, is a fire-soul but since that has a death sentence attached to it should hides it and says she is a conjurer and a seeker. She witnesses a murder and tries to save the victim consequently is blamed for the murder. She is under a death sentence from the vampire court and has 3 days to prove her innocence. Those days are full of magic and fighting other mages and demons that are trying to prevent her from finding the true killer. I would recommend this book to any who want magical excitement.

A disappointment and the narrator is a distraction

This could have been a better novel if the narrator was not so bad. Her performance was flat and she had a cadence to her speech like a bell shape. It started slow, picked up faster and slowed again. Nix the female protagonist, has a firesoul magic. It is a forbidden magic because the user must kill someone to obtain their magic. Her reluctance is based in a horrific incident that occurred when she was a child. This leaves her relying on her secondary magic of conjuring; a magic where anything can be brought into existence by magic.

Having firestone magic is a condition for death. Nix has the annoying habit of, lamenting about not using her magic for fear of being killed by the magic council; whining about not wanting to take a life for moral reasons. Keeping her roommates out of her situation because they have firestone magic as well. Those are valid issues, but I don’t want hours of listening to them in the drool narration.

Ares is a hybrid vampire; one of the vampire on a trio council. He tracked Nix in relationship to a death and she is the prime suspect. As far as he is concern, she is guilty. Her magic was detected on the scene. She has 3 days to prove her innocence and keep her firestone magic secret.

With an exploding dog collar around her neck, it will explode in 3 days if it is not removed by the vampire council, she begins to investigate the murder using the skills she saw on television programs. The process of providing assistance to the victim and being tired to the murder has a major flaw especially if you can track magic. That was an error that kept me distracted.

There is action in the book and that is the redeeming feature. Nix is great with a bow and Ares has the speed and skill of a vampire and can walk in the sun. The final fight scene, which included her roommates, their boyfriends, friends and the vampire council, was the best illustration of the different paranormal and some of their abilities.
Contrary to what is stated in the summary, there is not a strong romantic chemistry between Ares and Nix. When it is mentioned, maybe a total of 5 minutes in the story, it is very cumbersome.

The supporting characters are very interesting and I would like to see them work together, using the Indiana Jones reference. Nix by herself in not a compelling character or badass enough that I feel invested in follow her growth as she learns to use her magic with confidence and without social censure. The narrator is distracting and the story is not original enough.

wish I would have loved it

The concept of the book in the summary really caught my attention but the book seemed choppy and could not make it to the end. I bought the book, no freebies for me just disappointed.

awful narration

the narrator was so awful, I couldn't actually "hear" the story - was too busy trying to figure out if I wanted to laugh at the absurd narration or cringe at the sheer absurdity of it. laughter won out - didn't make it past the first chapter before I returned the book!

Worst narrator

I couldn’t even listen to the narrator. I enjoyed the story on kindle. Tried again with book 2 and got 3 minutes in and gave up. Horrible narration.
