Publisher's summary

Originally published in the 16th century, this is the classic history of the lives, sufferings, and deaths of the early Christian martyrs. As interesting as fiction, it is written with both passion and tenderness, telling the dramatic story of some of the most thrilling periods in Christian history. Foxe brings to life the days when "a noble army, men and boys, the matron and the maid, climbed the steep ascent of heaven, amid peril, toil, and pain."

After The Bible itself, no book so profoundly influenced early Protestant sentiment as the Book of Martyrs. Even in our time it is still a living force. It is more than a record of persecution. It is an arsenal of controversy, a storehouse of romance, as well as a source of edification.

Still a must-read for every student of history

Modern society would understand much better why the American constitution was set up the way it was by seeing the kinds of travesties against freedom and justice which can arise when evil is allowed unchecked into governmental halls of power.

Historical Document

This landmark publication is best described as an ageless Historical Document. The lessons it carries are huge & the enormity of their impact is immeasurable.

Good Book, Not A Good Version

The book is transferred from C.D.s. As the narrator reads, his voice trails off and you lose integral parts of the story. The random trailing off makes it more difficult to follow because the style of language is from the 1600s, as was the author.

Martyrs Who Showed Great Courage

From the times of the martyrdom of the Apostles until the writing of this book showed great courage in the faith. Even though, executions aren't taking place in more liberal countries now, they are still in other countries. We should keep them in our prayers. And, just because executions hasn't reached some of our shores and homeland, doesn't mean we are exempt. If these pressures and the powers that be should ever darken our door, will we too show such bravery and courage for Christ by taking a stand. It's easy for us say we will for Christ when we're not facing persecution and death. Some of us today buckle under pressure when having to witness to someone or a stranger about our faith in Jesus Christ. I pray for us to keep the faith and stand firm in what we face today, tomorrow or any distant future. Peace and grace to us all in Christ Jesus.

Please listen to this book more than twice so it will encourage you. The Heavenly Father wants to see His Son in you even to the death. Trust that you'll rise again and reign with our Savior.

God bless you all in Jesus name. Amen

Necessary read to remember those who went ahead

A necessary read/listen for all believers. A book to remember those persecuted and stood firm until the end. An eye-opener to the depravity of those who scourged and mistreated others and to the grace and commitment of those who did not revile those who mistreated them but went ahead with boldness. Also, to remind us that persecution and martyrdom continue to this day in many parts of the globe for those who call on the name of Christ. Note: Voice of the Martyrs (VOM) is a resource for those who wish to pray for others suffering similar fates today for their faith and testimonies.

Powerful

Every Christian should listen to this to help us understand how we all should be ready to suffer for Christ as Christ did for us if He chooses for us to. The old English is challenging but worth it.

So we never forget!!

A must read for all Christian's. History that does not get taught anymore. This is a good book to add to a good Christian library.
we take so much for granted in America.
Let us look back, so we won't get lazy.

In the end

It’s extremely puzzling that the martyrs of the Christian faith were first persecuted by the Jews then the Romans, then after about 1300 years, the Christians themselves persecuted their own. I guess you never know who your enemy really is but I know this my walk with the Lord isn’t nearly as impressive or even close to being exemplary then these true martyrs of Christ, God grant me the opportunity to be a confessor or a martyr and standard firm as they did.

Only complaints are Technical

This narration was adapted from discs, and so there are a few instances where parts are not audible due to there being some sort of defect from the original media. There weren't enough instances of this to give a horrible review, hence only 4/5 instead of lower.
