More of a police procedural than mystery to solve.

The main plot was excellent, but the sub-plot with the police/detectives was boring. I felt like the police characters were created for a TV show or a book series, to be followed on-going over various future cases instead of furthering the plot in this otherwise engaging novel. A lot of the detective action and conversations were filler.

There was not enough complexity in the mystery for me, no twists, just law enforcement following a trail. There were no “clues” for the listener to solve the crime, just the developments made by the detectives.

As a grandparent of 6 boys under 11-years-old and a 25-year teacher, I was worried I could not stomach the trauma of Evan’s situation. However, I gave this book 4 stars because of how sensitively the abduction was handled and how well developed Evan and his grandfather were. It was a beautiful story of generational family love, patience, healing, and recovery.

Claire and Matt had so much potential, but just not layered enough, very flat. The law enforcement characters were poorly developed. A lot of what they were doing, their conversations and many actions did not further the plot. I did not find them likeable and the main detective, Naylor had no moral compass (unregretful having an affair with a married man, one night stands, etc.)

The narration was outstanding by Lucy Paterson. Authentic accent and seamless when alternating between men and women in conversations.

The ending was hopeful and tied up loose ends for the main plot.

Edge of Seat

This book did not keep me on the edge of my seat as promotions claimed. Most of the story was "slice of life" kind of stuff. But one does get caught up in characters an wants them happy.

Beautifully written and very well narrated

This story is gripping. It is heartbreaking and emotional. But at the same time it’s uplifting and very satisfying. The characters are very real, and you feel their joy as well as their pain.

loved it

I loved the characters in this story. Finished the book in one setting, as I had to know what happened to them. This is one of my favourite books I've listened to.

Intriguing Crime Thriller

Evan is abducted after school with no witnesses, an event that is every parent's nightmare! The author chooses not to be graphically explicit about the horrors that Evan must have experienced. Instead, the emphasis is on relationships within the family and how they cope and survive the tragedy.
