About this listen

The first in a new series from bestselling crime author, Wes Markin!

To Detective Chief Inspector Frank Black they’re not just forgotten bones.

They’re forgotten hopes.

Forgotten dreams.

The forgotten voice of an angel.

When buried bones are unearthed by a storm in North Yorkshire’s picturesque coastal town of Whitby, Black is drawn into an investigation that takes him back to the late eighties and the fiery demise of a popular pub.

Frank is no stranger to vulnerability. With a shattered daughter, he lives with it. With an outsider in Detective Inspector Gerry Carver, he works with it.

And in Charlotte Wilson, a young, eighteen-year-old musician discarded and buried near the old whalebones of Whitby, he recognizes it.

At sixty-four, Black really should be retiring.

But Charlotte had hopes and dreams.

And nobody should be allowed to silence the voice of an angel.

Bestselling Wes Markin is back with the start of an exciting new series, perfect for fans of David Gatward, JD Kirk, Rachel McLean, JM Dalgleish and Simon McCleave.

Great characters

Stellar character development. A good pace as the story progresses. The story has some good twists but it is the characters and the deeds they have perpetrated that stands out. More than one crime is revealed as the past is examined. I do want more of this

Very “busy” mystery

Cons:
1. Very “busy”. Lots of characters, many extraneous & poorly developed.
2. Some scenes overstated to the point of near melodrama.
3. For first 75% of the book my energy was spent just running around, mentally, keeping track of loose threads, loose characters, loose story lines.

Pros:
1. Interesting resolution to mystery.
2. Good narration.
3. Likable & interesting protagonist & his police partner.

Will listen to next one in series, mainly to follow development of protagonist and his work partner.

A truly remarkable mystery, told with feeling and empathy for each character.

It's been a long time since I got out of bed in order to finish listening to a book. I had to last night! Had not expected such excellent writing and suspense, as this author is new to me. I will be reading every one of the books in this series. And then impatiently waiting for the next to be published.

I really like this series

Currently listening to Book three, Forgotten Souls. I enjoyed Forgotten Bones so quickly downloaded Forgotten Lives. Aside from the fact that Aubrey Parsons is awesome, this author has created a cast of a thoroughly interesting investigating team. Frank is a wonderful lead boss and his DI Gerry is truly a breath of fresh air. Her interactions with Frank will have you chuckling from time to time. I love how Wes Markin paints a picture of all the possible suspects. Best of all, he closes with an epilog explaining the outcome of each person. In forgotten lives he actually lets us know what happens long into the future of one person, for which I am glad.

Definitely a good book

It was a slow start for me then the story grabbed me and didn't let go. Aubrey Parsons does a great narration. He makes the story come alive.I am definitely adding this series to my collection. Thank you

Good Value

Lots of characters and peripheral story lines that come together nicely. Difficult to understand some of the words. I always hesitate to buy books with performers with accents. I dislike rewinding to follow the story lines which I had to do here.

Disappointing character development

Most of the characters were unlikeable. I enjoyed the autistic detective but would have liked more character development .

Fulfilling

I thought I had made a mistake purchasing this book as the story began and I'm so glad I kept listening. The book is so well-written and so well-narrated. I really liked the way the author let you know what Frank was thinking versus what he was saying. And his DI Gerry added such depth to the story. There is a large element of kindness and concern that I loved. I appreciated the hope given at the very end of the book regarding Charlotte's mother and the wrap-up of the characters lives. It turned out to be such a good book! I find myself wanting more.
