Publisher's summary

Chloe Chadwick’s last remaining family member, her grandmother, dies in a car accident and leaves her a letter that changes everything Chloe thought she knew about herself. The letter directs her to Salus, an island off the coast of Connecticut that can’t be found on any map.

When she arrives, she learns that she’s a part of a secret world living alongside humanity, one consisting of magic, shape-shifters, and elementals, where the Greek gods aren’t just believed in, they’re actually present. But within 24 hours of her arrival, a man is murdered, and Chloe is the only suspect. Things only get worse when she has to learn how to control her newfound powers while simultaneously clearing her name. But then, there’s a second murder and the pressure is on her—as well as the suspicion.

With some of the unusual residents on Salus calling for her arrest, Chloe finds herself desperate to uncover the many secrets of her new home, including the killer. But will her newfound friendships and skills as a private investigator be enough?

enjoyable enough

I generally enjoyed this. I thought it got a little info-dumpy with all the magic lessons and that slowed things down a bit. And the mystery basically solved itself when the author was ready to wrap the book up, instead of Chloe actually doing anything to solve it. But I thought the world was interesting, I liked the characters, and I’m curious to see how the romance(s) develop. (I wish it would turn into a why-choose romance. But I know better than to hope for that.) All in all, the book won’t be topping my favorites chart, but I’d happily read the next one…or listen to it. Maria McCann did a fine job with the narration.

Note: I received a free Audible code for a copy of this book. I chose to listen and review it.

Finding Salus

I really liked this book from the beginning. It hits all the feels and I love the tucked away town vibe. Narration was well done. If you are looking for some spice, I'd look elsewhere though.

Worth pursuing the series

The only reason why I gave this story four stars was because it did end in somewhat of a cliffhanger leaving us with a lot of questions. However, it is well written and kept me engaged so I can look forward to reading the next book in the series. It’s a murder mystery wrapped around Chloe‘s family. And in my mind it’s also a mystery in regards to her romance. I know who I’m rooting for in regards to her romantic interest. I always give a narrator five stars if his or her performance allows me to enjoy the story smoothly without irritating glitches.

A solid intro to a series

~Disclaimer: I received a free audiobook copy of this book.~

I continue to read books about suddenly inheriting a magical house/heritage.....a shift in my tropes of choice. As I said in my last review of this trope (Midlife Magica and Magnolias by Meredith Carlisle), this serves the purpose of being able to give us worldbuilding by having the protagonist learn it alongside you. It also gives you the person in a strange world vibe that I love.

I’m a fan of magic systems, so long as they don’t get too lore heavy, and enjoyed the magic lessons. I am a fan of LITRPG and that often has numbers and detailed explanations of the how of the skills/magic.

The cast was a bit large for a single book, but not too bad an introduction for a series. And I feel the main group got fleshed out well. I liked the characters and found the dialogue realistic.

““Promise not to freak out?”
“Uh, no? Sorry, but I just can’t predict what my reaction will be to something unknown. Like when someone promises not to get mad, how do you know? Maybe you’ll be royally pissed off. But I can try not to freak out?”” (Pg 47)

As far as the romance is concerned, it appears to be falling into the love triangle side of things. Which I am never a fan of. It doesn’t add positive tension in my opinion and just comes off as somebody needs to make up their mind ASAP. Of course, maybe that will change in the sequel. So, I guess I’ll find out later.

The mystery didn’t really have as many hints to it as I would have expected to be provided (given that our MC is a private investigator). Some aspects of it wrapped up rather abruptly, but there was a tease for the rest of the series. More questions need to be answered and I’m intrigued enough to follow along.

Narration was excellent. It was easy to listen to and tune out the outside world.

Magically draws you in and hold your attention

After the death of her Grandmother, Chloe goes to a small town named Salus to settle her grandmothers estate. Once she enters the town she discovers witches bears vampires and more (oh my). Her views of the world are quickly changed when she is the lead suspect in a murder which is shrouded in mystery and magic. This is a quick story that draws you in and keeps you interested. Love the author’s development of the characters and the town.
