Story
Travel to other planets is now a reality, and with overpopulation stretching the resources of Earth, the necessity of finding habitable worlds is growing ever more urgent. There’s a problem though—because the spaceships are slower than light, any communication between the exploring ships and Earth would take years.
Tom and Pat are identical twin teenagers. As twins they’ve always been close, so close that it seemed like they could read each other’s minds.

Story
After the fall of the American Ayatollahs as foretold in Stranger in a Strange Land and chronicled in Revolt in 2100, the United States of America at last fulfills the promise inherent in its first Revolution: for the first time in human history there is a nation with Liberty and Justice for All. No one may seize or harm the person or property of another, or invade his privacy, or force him to do his bidding. Americans are fiercely proud of their re-won liberties and the blood it cost them; nothing could make them forswear those truths they hold self-evident. Nothing except the promise of immortality…

Story
The totalitarian East has triumphed in a massive invasion, and the United States has fallen to a dictatorial superpower bent on total domination. That power is consolidating its grip through concentration camps, police state tactics, and a total monopoly upon the very thoughts of the conquered populace. A tiny enclave of scientists and soldiers survives, unbeknownst to America’s new rulers. It’s six against six million - but those six happen to include a scientific genius, a master of subterfuge and disguise who learned his trade as a lawyer-turned-hobo, and a tough-minded commander....

In what is considered one of Heinlein's most hair-raising, thought-provoking, and outrageous adventures, the master of modern science fiction tells the strange story of an even stranger world. It is 21st-century Luna, a harsh penal colony where a revolt is plotted between a bashful computer and a ragtag collection of maverick humans, a revolt that goes beautifully until the inevitable happens. But that's the problem with the inevitable: it always happens.

Through a revolutionary method known as somaforming, astronauts can survive in hostile environments off Earth using synthetic biological supplementations. With the fragility of the body no longer a limiting factor, human beings are at last able to journey to neighboring exoplanets long known to harbor life. June 1957. One hot afternoon in the backwaters of the Deep South, a young black farmer named Tucker Caliban salts his fields, shoots his horse, burns his house, and heads north with his wife and child. His departure sets off an exodus of the state’s entire black population, throwing the established order into brilliant disarray. Told from the points of view of the white residents who remained, A Different Drummer stands, decades after its first publication in 1962, as an extraordinary and prescient triumph of satire and spirit.

It is 21st-century Luna, a harsh penal colony where a revolt is plotted between a bashful computer and a ragtag collection of maverick humans, a revolt that goes beautifully until the inevitable happens. Robert A. Heinlein wrote The Number of the Beast, which was published in 1980. In the book Zeb, Deety, Hilda, and Jake are ambushed by the alien "Black Hats" and barely escape with their lives on a specially configured vehicle (the Gay Deceiver) which can travel along various planes of existence, allowing them to visit parallel universes. However, unknown to most fans, Heinlein had already written a "parallel" novel about the four characters and parallel universes in 1977.

Absorbing, if dated and well-written, creative
A very interesting and absorbing book as my first dipping into Heinlein either ever, or not since I was a teen. I did enjoy it. It is easy to say what I wanted more of or what didn't work as well as it may have in 1950, but it was enjoyable and well-written, plus very creative in its own way. The attitude toward women is extremely dated, and the scouting emphasis wasn't very appealing to me, but both understandable. The ending...while I was happy with the final choice, I would have enjoyed more farming and tree planting instead of what the author gave us. There is an entire two shelves of Heinlein in my home, so I may try another soon.

Back to the future.
I first read Farmer in the Sky about sixty years ago. As I listened to it just now, I realized how much this book, originally published in 1950, and others like it, were instrumental in sparking my lifelong interest in science and space travel.
Robert Heinlein, along with others with names like Asimov, Clarke, Bradbury and Sturgeon was among the writers from the so called "Golden Age." of Science Fiction.
Although much of the science in this book is now dated and obsolete, a lot of it was amazingly prescient. It is about a teenaged boy whose family left Earth to join a colony on Ganymede, one of the moons of Jupiter.
Farmer in the Sky was written for young people over a decade before Alan Shepherd was the first American to "blast off" to the edge of outer space.
I have little doubt that many of the scientists and engineers who made that possible were inspired by books like this one.

A lifelong favorite, a scout colonizing Ganymede!
Bill is an eagle scout and troop leader who moves with his family to Ganymede the largest moon of Jupiter to colonize it as a new home for humans in an increasingly crowded solar system. I first read this novel as a teenager and have reread it many times over the last four decades. While the scientific capabilities are still well beyond us they were based on what was known at the time the novel was written and on that basis they are as accurate today as they were in 1953.
As I have grown to need reading glasses I splurged on the audiobook so I could enjoy listening to this favorite story while engaged in routine tasks and found the performance by the narrator delightfully entertaining. Highly recommended for parents who want to get their scouts interested in science.

Sci fi story about colonization to Jupiter's moon due to Earth being over populated based on a teenager's perspective. I enjoyed the tale and being a scouter appreciated the scout side of the story. I thought the narrator did a good job.

one of Heinlein's best juveniles
Great visuals a good story and exciting events-- the tale of Bill and his family who emigrate to Ganymede and prove a farm and become true pioneers. the descriptions of the Moon Ganymede and The Moon rises over Jupiter, the speculative science on how Ganymede was terraformed are excellent. it's amazing how much visual information Heinlein was able to impart with economic writing style.

Do you think Farmer in the Sky needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
No. Heinlein is gon.
Any additional comments?
