Die Geschichte der Naturwissenschaft, wie wir sie heute kennen, begann damit, dass sich Leute im antiken Griechenland den Verlauf von Sternen und Planeten notierten. Jahrhunderte später brachten Aufzeichnungen Newton auf seine Gravitationstheorie. Noch später gab es einen Arzt, der sich genaue Notizen darüber machte, wo in London die Cholera ausbrach. All diese Beobachtungen führten zu konkreten, testbaren Vermutungen. Aber der Weg von der Vermutung zur Tatsache ist noch weit. Und nicht selten biegen wir auf der Suche nach der Wahrheit falsch ab.
Denn selbst bei uns, die wir uns gerne, oft, und informiert auf die Wissenschaft berufen, ist die Grenze zwischen Fakt und Meinung oft unklar oder wird deutlich überschritten. Den Unterschied zwischen Fakten und Meinungen zu erkennen ist nicht immer möglich – aber immer kompliziert. Um darin besser zu werden, müssen wir genau verstehen
• wie man beobachtet,
• wie man aus diesen Beobachtungen Vermutungen ziehen kann
• und wie man diese anschließend prüft, interpretiert, und an andere weitergibt.
